Hello,
I was diagnosed in Feb 2013 and will be having surgery in the Fall if everything goes as planned.
I am only 29 and have never been pregnant, but my husband & I would like to have children. Has anyone ever had this worry? If so, can you give me some feedback?
Christina
Hello – We do have posters here who have chosen surgery as their treatment option and have gone on to have successful pregnancies. Hopefully, they will chime in here with their stories.
The following is a great resource document from the American Thyroid Association on thyroid issues and pregnancy. The section on Graves’ starts on page 1094 of the original journal article (page 14 if you download as a PDF).

One of the most important issues discussed in this document is the recommendation for antibody testing for all women with a past history of Graves’ at the 20-24 week mark — regardless of how they were treated. Due to the risk of passing antibodies on to the fetus, the involvement of a maternal-fetal specialist recommended if antibodies are extremely elevated.
Hi, sorry you are having to deal with Graves’.
After your surgery, recover, get stable on your meds, I suggest following Kimberly’s references and advice. Find an OB doc who is familiar with Graves’. Although you really won’t be high risk in the scary sense of the word, it is more likely that high risk OB docs will be more familiar with Graves’, that is just a thought.
You will be fine. I had a TT in my 20’s, had two more children after that. It was so long ago, that I suspect antibody labs did not exist at that time. Babies tested at birth, all was well, and as adults they are fine, with no autoimmune issues or Graves’, and all three are almost 50 now.
ShirleyThank you both very much!!
