Hi,
I have a friend who had thyroid cancer and had a WAY WAY bigger dose of RAI (the kind that requires a stay in a special isolated hospital room for a couple of days) than Graves patients receive. She also had to have annual full body imaging scans done for 5 years after. She now has a very healthy 2 month old baby. Granted, it was about 10 years ago that she went through treatment but she only met her husband about 4 yrs ago.
I hope her story helps ease some fears.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Laurel
Hi Kristi,
Pregnancy after RAI is not recommended for at least 12 months after. Excess RAI not absorbed by the thyroid is excreated in our urine and sweat. Since the bladder is close to the overies, there is a slight chance it could harm developing eggs. That is why the doctors recommend at least 12 months after RAI to try to get pregnant.
Hello, Ive decided to go to the RAI route to be over and done with this. I am wondering if anyone out there has been through this and gotten pregnant shortly after with success? I will be 33 in July and my husband and I want to start trying. Our goals were to try at the end of the summer. I have had a surgical consultation and although he was very supportive he also said he would go the RAI. I have an appt for an uptake and scan next week. Hopefully I am doing the right thing, Im not big on either the RAI or surgery but meds have proven unsuccessful so I need to do something.
Hi guys,
Jake, I’ve actually heard some doctors shorten that to 6 months. I think it may be related to the dose that’s used. Still, 12 months may be wise as a general rule, just to be certain that the patient has achieved stable levels following RAI.Hi, I had RAI in 1998 and again in 2002 (I think this was the date around that time anyway) had a healthy baby boy in 2006, and had another healthy baby boy 2009. I waited for my periods and ovulation to be really regular and I could set my watch to them! I took my thyroxine throughout my pregnancy no problems, you do require a bigger dose when your body naturally calls on the thyroid hormone to sustain the baby in the first few weeks (you get a surge in hormones that then go to the baby, thyroid is one) I was not actively trying for a baby until 2005, took me 2 months to get pregnant forst time ” title=”Razz” /> I really hope you get your baby, I don’t know if this really old post but I thought I would answer anyway just in case ” title=”Very Happy” /> Jo xx
I was trying to get pregnant and was told by my very first dr. to do RAI. I refused and sought another dr. who said try ATD’s. I did and it helped.
At the time though they said if I did do RAI it would be 6months till i could have a baby. i was horrified and so upset about it, it was 2001 when I found out and didn’t get on meds till end of 2001 then was able to get pregnant in 2002. ALthough it took longer while I was on meds I am greatful because i did do well on the meds and am currently in remission with no meds.I see that you have tried the medicine route and it didnt’ help your levels. I’m sorry to hear that. I would say that you need to talk to dr. AND THE technician who is going to give you the radioactive iodine and see what they say about trying for a baby after the RAI. Please please don’t try to get pregnant before the recommended time.
Oh and don’t forget that 33 IS NOT old to have a baby!!!! I know that might be what you are thinking but we are a species that is living longer and our bodies are adjusting to that. I Have 4 kids, i had them at ages (21,29,30,32) , I am having ‘female’ issues now and might have to go on the pill(don’t want to but will if i must) so I might consider having another one before I do that. i’m currently 36 !
My friends that are my age are just starting their families! -
