I posted this below, but I just wanted to update all of you who are having puffy eye issues because of TED. I started a high dose of oral Prednisone on Thursday, and three days into this treatment, I can already detect a noticeable decrease in puffiness in my lower eyes. The upper lids feel "lighter," although there’s no visible change. I’m really happy about this, because for the first time in — ??? — I can keep my eyes open without feeling like there’s a small tsunami sloshing around behind my lids.

What astounded me more than anything is that not only is the puffiness in my eyes receding, but … I can BREATHE again. I didn’t realize how inflamed my sinuses were (due to bad allergies), and how much pressure I had in that area. It feels like I’ve literally got 50% more lung capacity. I probably could have doubled my run distance today.

I know that I can’t take these steroids forever, but … my eyes feel so much better. I feel so much better in other small ways that I never noticed. Oh — and I’m sleeping through the night, too. No apnea, two nights in a row! I don’t care if I gain a little weight or get a little "moon-faced" while using this, it’s just awesome to be able to breathe and keep my eyes open!!! <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

Has anyone had good success with Prednisone?

    Hi Melissa,

I’m glad it’s helping. You probably won’t have the nasty symptoms unless you’re on the Prednisone for a really long time. I’ve been on a high dose (tapering down) for six weeks with no problems at all. But everyone’s different. How long are you on it for? What dose?

The sad part is that when you taper off, the problems will more than likely return to one degree or another, and you can’t be on it forever. It definitely is nice while it lasts, though. Are you having trouble sleeping?

Hi, Dianne. My dosage is 20 mg, 3 X a day for one week, then 2 X a day for a week, and then 1 x day for a week, after which I take a half-tab for three weeks +, at which time I have my check=up.

I’m having an easier time sleeping. I don’t wake up during the night gasping for breath, and when I do wake up, I feel refreshed. It’s pretty vicious on my tummy if I don’t take it with food, but there is a warning label on my bottle "Take with food."

I can handle the eye issues once off this medication. But I just don’t think I can go back to the sinus pressure and apnea.

I understand how difficult the sinus issues are. I went through 4 years of complete misery with sinus problems and had two sinus surgeries during that time. My double vision has fluctuated with the severity of my sinus problems. Experts have not been of any help, nor have they taken seriously the relation of the sinuses to the double vision. Fortunately, the pain has eventually settled down over time, and along with it the fluctuations in double vision.

Prednisone did seem to help settle down my sinus issues for a time, so I hope this will also be true with you.

You may get by without any serious Prednisone side effects on the dose you’re taking. I hope so.

    Best wishes,

Dianne, is the sinus pressure relief worth mentioning to the eye specialist or my allergist? When my GD was active, I had nosebleeds all the time.

My eyelids are getting pretty close to what I would consider "normal" today. I still have swelling along the browbone, but that appears to be going down, too. <img decoding=” title=”Smile” />
