    Hi,

Two things I totally forgot to mention about the post surgery experience which weren’t major, just irritating – and I cannot recall whether I was told it was a reaction to the general anesthesia or the painkiller.
    (1) I will preface this by saying – I know relatively nothing about pharmacology or anatomy, and I realize this disease strikes women ten times more often than men…so I have no idea how this plays out for the opposite sex. However, with the encouragement of the nurses, when I got back to the room I must have drank about 64 ounces of fluid in the first couple of hours and I was pretty pumped full of IV fluids… the um, plumbing failed to crank back up again right away despite having the sensation that it was about to work. It took several hours for things to get back to near normal.
    (2) The second – at the risk of too much information, I will simply say – for the first few days at home, raisins and Metamucil have been my friends.

Today is day 5. First day of levothyroxine. I can tell the soreness is lifting somewhat – in fact last night I was did not need to sleep quite so upright to remain comfortable.

I find any cloth from a shirt on top of or moving against the scar really uncomfortable so I’ve been wearing gaping v-neck t-shirts around the house. Boys wanted to go out to lunch, so I dug a few lightweight cotton/silk Hawaiian shirts out of the back of the closet. They didn’t hide the scar that is my neck, but it camouflaged it a bit and I figure the print was very distracting. I am a middle age 47 year old bald guy – I mean really who is looking at me anyway?

Which reminds me… I did manage to walk down the hall having forgot I was in a hospital gown that was open in the back…

Love the addendums — keep ’em coming! :) I’m betting as the days wear on and your mind clears even more you’ll be able to right a “How To” book on TT’s. Put me down for your first autographed copy. :)

    1. Typical, more for males than females (said the pre/post op nurse that I am)
I have catheterized more embarrassed males between 20-50 than females!
When you are the person with the full bladder, generally, the person does not care at ALL who does the draining, as long as the draining is done! Terrible feeling. Sounds like that all came out on its’ own in your case.

    2. Almost everyone who takes a pain med (called an opioid) gets super constipated. Par for the course. That is another system that we take for granted, until it goes on strike! Understand!

THEY SHOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU PANTS, FOR PETE SAKES!

Hi Bill. Thanks for sharing and glad to see your sense of humor is back! All these details are so hopeful. When I log off I’ll be on a mad search for all my limited supply of deep v-neck or button up shirts. Hiding the scar isn’t important to me until I return to work. Don’t want to frighten my staff!

And in my last trip to the grocery store I’ll buy some Metamucil….something I’ve never had to do before…interesting..

    Have a great 6th day!

    Karen
