Just wanted to give a quick update- I am not on the board much, but when I was frantically searching for information a year ago I found so much useful stuff here and I liked reading the "success"/treatment stories, so I thought I’d give an update.
I had RAI for treatment of Grave’s disease last october (2010). My diagnosis was following 2 miscarriages (one at 10 weeks, the other at just over 6). I chose rai because it felt like the best option for me. I am very happy with the decision. A few months after treatment I was officially on the hypo side and started on synthroid. Took a few months to find the right dose and then I was given permission to get pregnant again. (long story, but I was also seeing a fertility specialist- ended up with reduced ovarian reserve- I am 36- so I took some fertility injections and iui to get pregnant this time around).
I am happy to report that i am now 23 weeks pregnant and doing great. My synthroid had to be increased early on as my tsh shot up to 17, but it has been stable since then. Baby is doing well- I will have antibodies checked again in January and depending on how high they are, it will basically determine the monitoring of the baby for the end up pregnancy. They like to check growth often with even treated Grave’s to monitor and make sure baby’s thyroid isn’t effected negatively (by the antibodies).
The best part has been, a few of the complications I had with my first pregnancy (my son is 3) have been eliminated. I had chronic hypertension for 10 years prior to this—it has been gone since the rai. No meds needed (after 10 years). My endoccrinologist thinks i had Grave’s for a lot longer than we ever knew.
I am happy with my decision to treat with RAI and ecstatic to finally be pregnant again.
I wish everyone well…
Hi Pinky, of course I remember you well! What a wonderful piece of news you bring to all of us. Sounds like you are having excellent care for both you and baby! I am so happy for you! There are people on the board right now asking about pregnancy, and it is so encouraging for all of us to know that the battle we have with Graves’ can and does have a happy ending, where we actually feel pretty good again. Hard to believe when you are in the middle of it.
Best wishes to you, and so glad you wrote. IT will mean a lot to others.
ShirleyThanks for sharing your experience with RAI & pregnancy. ” title=”Smile” />
I hope you don’t mind if I ask – but was the need for a fertility specialist a result of the RAI or was that due to something else?
