I am experiencing my second round with Graves Disease.
The first time I couldn’t eat, anxiety, heart rate, etc.
I am almost 5’7″ and weighed just over a hundred pounds.
This time, I decided to do the radioiodine in hopes that
it would “cure” me for good. Now, my appetite has gone
crazy! My heart rate is going down, but my weight is going up.
No matter what I eat, I have jumped almost two sizes in two months.
Has this happened to anyone else and will it stop????

I went through radioiodine treatment a year ago, went from hyperthyroidism to
hypothyroidism at three months. When you go hypo your metabilism goes way down
so you don’t burn off calories like when you were hyper. When you were hyper
you are hungry all the time and burn it off faster. Sometimes your appepite
can remain stimulated when you go hypo so therefore the weight gain.
Eat less, exercise more – there are bb messages concerning weight gain
on the thyroid bb at the mining co. site. Hope I have helped you some.
    Email me if you want.

Are you now on synthroid, thyroid replacing hormone?

Margaret..I had RAI on April 2nd. From about the third week in May until last week I gained 12 pounds! Even my ‘fat’ clothes are too tight! I noticed this gain about the same time I noticed that I have no energy anymore. I’ve been on synthroid for about three weeks (probably too weak a dose). I ride my bike 4 miles a day and have added a weight resistance routine at the gym. I do this early in the morning, a minimum of 5 days per week, and am really poooped in the afternoon, but I believe that keeping the muscles strong will be a key in my recovery. Also, I started the new Weight Watchers program last Saturday, and am already seeing a difference. I wish I had started to diet right away….what a mistake! Good Luck!

    Happy Valentine’s Day,NaeNae!
I am sorry to hear you are feeling so lousy. It’s possible you could be heading to hypoland. Do you have a standing lab slip? If so, use it and get your blood drawn. If not, call your doctor TODAY and request labs be done pronto. You don’t want to head to hypo and stay there.
Keep us posted and let us know your outcome.

    Well Wishes,

I know exactly how you feel about the weight gain. I think I am becoming obsessed with it too. I gained 25 pounds leading up to the time I was diagnosed. I began Tapazole and took it for 1 yr. While I was on the meds my weight levelled off, I exercised and even managed to tighten up and lose a few pounds. Then in early March, my doc pulled me off the meds and told me to make a decision about RAI/surgery. Since that time I am starting to beef back up AGAIN after all the exercise and calorie counting. I feel horrible about myself too, and ashamed that I am so weight-conscious, when people are out there dying daily. Let’s both realize that this, too, shall pass. In your case, you probably have gone hypo and once on Synthroid, you’ll straighten out. In the meantime, find comfort in the fact that there are others who are horrified about getting BIGGER!!!

I am confused – why did you gain weight when you went OFF the tapizol? When I am off my meds I become hyper and get thin – I thought that the RI treatment would make me fat but I am confused that being off meds caused you to gain weight.

I have no idea why I’ve gained weight! The Dr told me I might gain more weight and I have. Now that I know what was going on w/ me, I’ve had symptoms for almost four years (of GD and hyper) and that’s when I initially started gaining weight for what I thought was no reason. Every day I weigh myself to see what I can actually eat for the day. It’s ridulous. I just want to be “normal” again and be able to eat healthy again.
