Well, I was plagued with panic attacks for a while prior to diagnosis, and during early treatment. Once my thyroid levels had been controlled in the normal zone for a while, the panic attacks went away.

How did I cope? I was told by a psychologist that the body cannot sustain a panic attack for longer than about 20 minutes. Something about the adrenaline or whatever — I don’t remembver the specifics, just the time frame. Give or take. So that helped me when they occurred. I knew they were of limited duration. Not hours, not days, just minutes. I could cope with twenty minutes. It helped me to relax during the "ride."

    Hello,

Just a quick question. So I have been on the Methimazole 10mg for the past 4 weeks. I still am getting panic attacks, which I didn’t get before being diagnosed with GD. Does anyone else get them as well? If so what are you doing to cope with them and do they go away once your more regulated?? I am hoping so because the really are ruining my days <img decoding=” title=”Sad” /> Any insight would be much appreciated!

My labs last time were the following

    TSH 0.02 range .35-5.5
    T3 – 7.2 range 2.3-4.2
    T4 2.2 range .08-1.8

    Thanks,
    Krystal

I had panic attacks several years before I was diagnosed. I realize looking back that I was probably having other symptoms of Graves then too, weight loss, GI issues etc.. They will get better if they are just from the hyperthyroid symptoms.

I started to experience nervousness and anxiety that lasted hours when I was diagnosed 4 months ago. I still don’t feel perfect, but I week by week it is getting better to the point that I can control my life now.. I just want to tell you that a lot of people with Graves still feel it especially at the beginning.
After some time I got used to it, but at the same time I try all possible relaxation techniques , meditation, relaxation tea. I used to take beta blocker that helped me with some anxiety as well .

I suffered from bad panic attacks before and during treatment. I was even somewhat OCD and strange phobias. Once regulated – most of it went away bu tpanic and anxiety (especially health related worries/anxiety) became kind of habitual. Its MUCH better than it was but I cant say I never have them. My biggest issue now is just constant worry over my health and symptoms. Good luck!!
