Hello,
I’ve had Graves for 8 years now. It runs in my family of course. I haven’t been on meds for a few years because mine went into remission. Unfortunately, I noticed my hair started coming out and my body started to feel weak. I was so fatigue and started missing time for work. Went to the doctor and they confirmed it’s out of remission. Now I will start my journey again with the disease. It’s frustrating but until there’s a cure then I will fight it.I’m sorry to hear that you are out of remission, but that’s good that you were aware of the symptoms and got back in to see the doc quickly. Wishing you all the best!
I just found out today I am out of remission after 21 months. It is disheartening but I am glad I recognized the symptoms this time and didn’t let it go as long as the first time! I am starting back on 10 mg Methimazole tomorrow, wish me luck!
@Missygail – Yes, it’s definitely important to catch a relapse early! Wishing you luck!
I have noticed since my remission ended I am having trouble remembering how to do things I have done 100 time before, such as the way to hold my moisturizer cream bottle the same way I have always done!! Anyone else have this problem? It can be quite alarming! Thanks
One of the most comment effects of a thyroid hormone imbalance is “thinking” issues — I remember that when I was hyperthyroid, I was scatterbrained and couldn’t keep things in my head for more than a moment (at times). When I was hypothyroid, I couldn’t even make thoughts come into my head. Once your levels are better, this ought to clear up (well, after they’re better and also stable)…. Hang in, I know it’s awfully disconcerting!!
@Khandi/@missygail – has your only treatment been Anti thyroid drugs?
I was diagnosed with Graves back in April 2013. I’ve been maintaining my health on 5 mg of mmi (when I dropped to 2.5 mg after 6 months, I started getting some mild TED with my right eye and my TSH dropped back down out of range…My ranges are all good now after a month @ 5mg).
My goal is to reach remission and ride it out as long as I can. And like missygail, if I relapse, I would go back to mmi.
I’m assuming it’s possible to reach remission again after relapsing???
Thanks,
JamesHi Khandi-
I just read your post and I’m SO sorry to hear about your relapse . You mentioned that graves runs in your family; is it hyper-hypo- thyroid? I have a 21 year old daughter that started getting her blood tested a few months back which she’ll have to get bloodwork done every year now just to make sure checks and balances are in place.May I ask, when you came out of remission did you suffer a thyroid storm or you just ‘knew’ what the symptoms were?
This is what scares me about graves remission stress can trigger it and boom you’re back on the roller coaster again.
I noticed my hair was thinning BEFORE I was diagnosed which was last August; I chalked it up to menopause (I’m 46) but became pro-active before it got out of control. Like you I notice when my levels are crazy and all over the map- it shows in my hair so I just use a product EVERY week now to prevent thinning and body-less hair. My thyroid cant be controlled but I have control over thinning hair so I have one up on my graves!
Feel better and I’ll keep you in my thoughts.
