The news has recently mentioned that organic brown rice syrup has higher levels or arsenic, which can effect the liver.
I am currently taking Methimazole to treat my Graves, which can effect the liver as well…
Should I be concerned about eating products that contain the syrup?
It is in a lot of healthy choices; energy bars, cereals, crackers, granolas, etc.Hello – This is the first time I’ve heard this question posed, so I would check with your doctor on this one.
Liver issues with anti-thyroid drugs are quite rare, but this issue would certainly be worth some further research.
I read that in the NYC tribune, some SEattle papers, and on NBC AND ABC news.
Here are a couple references:http://www.king5.com/news/Arsenic-discovered-in-organic-brown-rice139490848.html

I had never heard of organic rice syrup in my entire life. The research seems to show evidence that it is a carcinogen. Apparently it is used(improperly, in my opinion) in some infant formula, and certain granola bars.
But the data from Dartmouth seems reliable.
So I think anyone should be concerned about eating products with this ingredient. And you are correct, it apparently is in a lot of energy bars.
I took a quick look at a few cereals and crackers at the store, though, and did not find it listed. So I will be checking labels for the food i consume. Generally, except for cereal I don’t eat any of the products mention.
Thanks for this information.
ShirleyVery interesting. My husband and I are long time cyclists and trail runners. We are familiar with the brown rice syrup as it was used in one of the popular energy gels – Clif Shot. It was the first ingredient (organic) listed. We noticed, sometime last year, that Clif had changed their carb source to maltodextrin rather than the organic brown rice syrup. I guess we now know why they changed!!
