Patrick – just wanted to say that you may not know how inspiring your video is to people. People with various degrees of TED now know that they can be helped and look much better – because you certainly are! Thanks from the bottom of my heart. (I’m waiting for my OD).

To Pat and his Mum thank you for the information and video. I watched and read with great interest before my surgery last Thurs 5th March. I commend you both for sharing with me this experience as Little information is forthcoming from the surgeons themselves. I am now at home struggling with my post op symptoms and have once again watched the video to reassure me that I am not alone. In my case I am the sufferer of graves disease and my 3 sons in their 20 s have little comprehension of the disease. Today I am feeling so down. I have battled this disease for 5 years now through every available treatment and am tired. I am so glad to have found this forum completely by accident. I wish you Pat great improvement in your health and hope you are happy with your "new look" and I wish your Mam the pleasure of seeing you healthy and happy. Thank you again. God Bless you both. Hi everyone,

My name is Cyndi. I had orbital decompression surgery performed on my right eye on February 17th and thought I’d drop by in case I could be of help to anyone who may be scheduled to undergo this procedure.

Like many of you, I was scared and a little apprehensive but at the same time, I was so tired of the pain, pressure and the way that I looked that I couldn’t wait for the surgery date to roll around…..I was like a little kid waiting for Christmas. I know that sounds strange but I think many of you will understand what I mean.

The first night after the surgery was a bit rough so I am glad I stayed in the hospital overnight. I have episodic Cluster Headaches and ended up getting hit about 3 hours post-op with doozie of a headache. I also somehow ended up with a scratched cornea of my left eye due to the protective lens that was inserted to protect my eye during surgery.

I did have double vision and depth perception problems which were worse in the mornings and at night and still have these problems at times during the day but the episodes have dramatically decreased. There is also a tight feeling in my eye when I try to look left to right or up and down but this is also decreasing with time.

Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions and if I can help, I will gladly do so. GED is a frustrating condition but with each other’s support we can help each other.

For those of you who have surgeries scheduled, I send my best wishes to you for a speedy recovery.

    I

Hi, Cindy — My son had decompression surgery in January this year and still has really blurry vision on his right eye. He will have another surgery to make more room for his right eye, so this time they will take some bone out from the sinus area. I hope this will finally help Steven’s proptosis and blurry vision.

    God Bless & take care.

    Regards,
    Dolores

    Dolores,

I hope Steven’s surgery will help to correct his vision problems. If you have a chance, keep us posted on his progress.

I feel so badly that he has to undergo another procedure.

    Thank you, Cynjeep89.

Dianne W., Elf, Ski — You all have a wealth of knowledge. As I mentioned, my son Steven had decompression surgery, but will need more surgery to create more room in the sinus area (they did not touch this area with the first surgery). I hope this will finally help his blurry vision and severe proptosis. Did any of you have blurry vision, anybody reading this??? Steven can only see if he put small prints really close to his right eye… The doctors said there’s no optic nerve damage caused by severe pressure in his right eye, so it’s just really bizarre. I’m praying & hoping the next surgery will help with the vision problem.

    Thank you all.

So sorry to hear that Steven is having blurry vision. It must be frustrating for him after all that he gone through. Do the doctors think the next surgery will help this problem?

I didn’t have blurred vision post-op but did have some double vision and depth perception problems. It is now one month since my surgery and these problems have decreased but are not totally gone. I notice that if I move my head too quickly from side to side, I get a bit dizzy.

I wish Steven all the best and hope you keep us updated on his progress.

I had orbital decompression surgery just overr one week ago on both eyes. I am extremely worried about my inability to see. Everything is like looking through a layer of vaseline. Anyone have any ideas on how long this will last. Surgeon said that I should be able to return to work within 10-14 days. HELP!!!

    Beena,

I had the decompressions, and I recall having extremely blurry vision at that time too. That was in 2002, so I don’t recall to the day how long it was, but I was able to return to work in two weeks. You should call your doctor about this all the same, and make sure he’s aware of this, just in case it’s going on longer than it should.

Did he put you on Prednisone or anything else to help you with the swelling, post-surgery?

How are you doing otherwise? Are you pleased with the change? If not, keep in mind that you’ll see a LOT of improvement from this point over the next 6-12 months.

    Hi Judy,

It’s understandable that you’re nervous. For me, the decompression surgery was the turning point for my eye disease, as far as making me feel somewhat like my old self again. I truly wish you well and hope you’re as happy with the outcome as I was with mine. When you reach up after the surgery and feel how flat your eyes feel (comparatively) and feel that diminished feeling of pressure, give a big smile for me. <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” /> Then as soon as you are able, please let us know how you’re doing. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Thanks for the reply Dianne. I am on prednisone tablets as well as ointment. I had lower lid skin grafts as well. I am still not able to focus my vision and will see the Dr. on Monday to have stitches removed. I am hoping there will be more improvement after that. There is an obvious lessening of the bulging of my eyes (after Dr.s telling me for 10 years there was nothing they could do). I am also planning to have the upper eyelids done in a couple of months. Now if only I could see enough to return to my life.

    Hi Beena,

I advise you not to get in too much of a hurry to have the upper lids done. If you have them done before your eyes have finished settling from the decompression then you’ll have a higher chance of being unhappy with the position they’re in later. I speak from experience.

Did you have hard palate grafts on your lower lids, or was some other material used?

Could it be the ointment you’re using that’s causing the blurriness? I realize that’s probably a silly question, but I have to ask to be sure. If you hadn’t ever used ointment before you could be unaware that that causes blurriness. Anyway, I’m sure you’re right that removing the sutures will be of some help.

Good luck with your appointment and I hope your doctor can shed some light on what’s causing your vision problems.

    Hi Dianne;

How long do you think I should wait for the upper lids to be done? I can’t remember if I mentioned that the lining over the eye seems to be bulging on one side(the worst side). It doesn’t seem to be able to settle into place. Everytime I put drops in they make it more swollen. Does that make sense to you? Anyway, I am off to the Dr today and will update later.

    Thank you.

    Beena
