Hi Cynthia — glad you are sleeping a little better! I did want to correct one thing, though: sometimes one doesn’t have a choice about taking methimazole in the pm, depending on dosage. I was originally on 60 mg, 20 mg 3x per day at 8 hour intervals, so that meant I had to take a dose in the afternoon and another in the evening. Of course if you only have to take it once a day, or even twice, that’s a different story, as it was for me once I was down to 5 mg per day (within 2 months of diagnosis).

cheers,
lhc

Hello…
Glad to hear of your improved sleeping. Benadryl is one of my favorites, as well, and has been since I also have allergies. I did not know about the connection between Methimazole and sleeping problems, and I have been taking it in the evening–until today that is. Thanks for that bit of info–my doctor did not tell that either.

Hi Cynthia – Although being hypER can definitely cause sleep issues (as you know ), I have not heard of sleep difficulties being a side effect of methimazole. In fact, *drowsiness* is listed as one of the potential minor side effects of this drug. However, unless your doctor has prescribed specific times to take the drug, you might play around with dosing times to see if you notice any impact on your ability to sleep. For example, I take mine twice a day, and I find that I tend to sleep better with an early evening dose, rather than waiting until right before bedtime. Others may have a slightly different experience.

Best of luck!

sorry if the infomation about methamazole was incorrect about metamazole causing problems with sleep I have found that when I take my 20 mg dose in the earily am I have been sleeping alittle better the problem with drug side effects are that they can be oppisite than normal documented side effects so I quess we all have to try and see how it works for me am sleeping a little better up frequentily and feel as if sleep is hard work…… my real problem is how I feel when I get up ugh!!!!! it takes me about 30 min. until I really feel safe to walk???? is that normal???? take 30 mg propanaol when I wake up and then I feel better still shaky ……. also my body hurts is that normal???? thanks for help cb

Hi Cynthia – I would suggest writing these symptoms down and bringing them to your doctor on your next visit. HypERthyroidism can definitely cause muscle weakness and also tremors. (And personally, I tend to feel a little shaky after a poor night’s sleep, even when I’m *not* hypER). However, as for the body pain, it would be difficult for someone who is not a medical professional to sort out what is due to Graves’ and which are due to your RA. Joint pain is more commonly a sign of hypO than hypER, but every patient is a little different.

You definitely want a doctor on your team who will pay attention to all your symptoms and will work with you to get back to good health.

I have been taking my methimazole in the am instead of at night (only take it once a day) for the last few days and have been sleeping better since then, also. Hmmm. Maybe it’s psychological. Strange, but it seemed to work for me, too. Joy

I know its been a few weeks since posting…Dr lowered my methimazole from 20mg to 10mg per day…ft4 is still borderline, but decreasing quite well, as is the tsh increasing, but slow as it should. Dr told me to take beta blocker at night as they tend to produce sleepy side effects as well…as for the joint pain, I have had joint pain for years, the ATD didn’t increase the pain, although when the hypER symptoms started, I had all I could to get into an upright position after sitting for awhile, and thepain was horrible. Since the decrease in dosage on 7/6, I have noticed an increase in raging again, and the irritability is back again…sleeping is okay for now, but I have since acquired a lousy cold with sore throat, runny nose, and massive phlegm, no fever though…I have been battling this off/on now for almost 2 weeks, and it finally got the best of me…I started having utacaria, and found that benadryl works wonders for the itching. Have also noticed red marks that look like welts with no pain or itching, they come and go, and some are just a bunch of red dots. The sun seems to have an effect on this symptom. I keep reading and trying to learn more and more in order to figure out how to best manage this and myself. I don’t like not feeling well, I hate being irritable, and especially the raging…

Hope everyone is good…I also started to BLOG all my stuff, thinking journaling will help me and maybe my family somewhere down the road…if you are interested in keeping up with me and what is going on, it is

I have always found writing helps me psychologically with things, maybe this will too!

Hi Lauri – With the sore throat, you might call your doc’s office just in case they might want to check your White Blood Cell count. Your symptoms do seem to be your garden variety cold…and the fact that you don’t have a fever is a good sign. However, it doesn’t hurt to err on the side of caution and check with your doctor for further instructions.

Also, if you need a decongestant, definitely check with your doctor *before* trying any of the "daytime" and/or "non-drowsy" cold meds. I was told to avoid these when I was hypER, as it could have made my heart rate increase even more.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Kim…all I took was some Tylenol…figured it was a "cold"…the sore throat is gone today, as is most of the coughing due to phlegm running down…still have runny nose to some degree, but overall feeling better today.

On a side note though…woke up unusually anxious this morning and early by my standards… seems the bowels are getting loose again, wondering if the decrease was too much…too soon.
