one more question to anyone…I have had some eye trouble for the last 5 years (before I got diagnosed with Graves last Jan it was my first symptom years ago), mostly blurred vision in my left eye. My eyes do not bulge but they are very very dry. I went to the eye doctor back then and have them checked yearly and all has been fine except getting new glasses.
Anyway, I had blurred vision start up in both eyes about 2 weeks ago after I took some steroids for my rash from the Methimozole. It kind of went away but was better when I wore my glasses and wasn’t blurry at all. Went to eye doctor to get them checked again and again all was fine in his eyes. Anyway after the RAI they seem blurry again and am concerned as I’ve read it can make your eyes worse. Is this just temporary and from before or was it the RAI? I would think it would be too soon.
I feel my vision is so bad now without my glasses and I never used to have to wear them much as I am near sighted but they are blurry even seeing close without my glasses. I have no pain except sometimes they feel tired – like this weekend.
SO was curious about RAI and blurred vision and if I should be doing anything else.
Thanks!
LaurenI know of no connection between “blurry” vision and RAI. RAI has been shown in one (repeat, ONE) study to produce a temporary worsening of TED symptoms in approximately 15% of patients who do the RAI option. It was thought (in this study) that the RAI stimulated an immune system response. It does not CAUSE the eye disease.
But with issues like eye issues, it is important (no matter what the reason) for you to check with an opthamologist (i.e. and MD whose specialty is eye diseases). We need accurate vision to safely drive and perform other functions in our lives, so having your eyes double checked cannot hurt anything.

I have been noticing some problems with my eyes. My eyes feel tired all the time. They seem to be dry a lot too. I had been wearing contacts but had to stop because my eyes were so dry and irritated that I couldn’t stand them. I just saw an eye doc in August of this year, before being diagnosed, and had a exam. My prescription hadn’t changed and I got some new glasses. I am not sure if all this eye irritation is caused by Graves and it the start of the eye problems. My endo measured my eyes and they were in the normal range. How do the eye problems start?

I have had radiation therapy (10 treatments) in April and been on steroids since then with no ill affects what so ever but my eyes continue to give me trouble with either crossed vision or depth perception problems. I am anticipating surgery but a little scared about it at the same time. Is there any one out there who has had the surgery and received benefit from it. I would like some kind of in put from someone out there who has the same problem.
I was just diagnosed about 2 months ago. I am told that I can move forward with Radiation, but I am afraid to due to my eye situation. They are slightly protuding. Sometimes they are bloodshot. Often times they are protuding slightly with bags under them. They water a lot or I should say that I can cry at the drop of a pin. Anything that even slightly moves me. I am worried that if I get the radiation my eyes will become worse, and I don’t know that I can handle that. Although, I think it may be a good route to go down. I am stuck as my DR. tells me it will become worse for several months before getting better. Help! Someone give me some words of encouragement if there are any.
I noticed that you hadn’t gotten a response yet to this question. I would say that you need to make an appointment with an opthamologist, especially one who is familiar with TED. I haven’t had any noticeable symptoms but I see my opthamalogist once a year, in addition to the optometrist, so that he can track the condition of my eyes. It gives a measure of comfort. Good luck with all that you are dealing with.
