Amanda – Good question. I know they have found a link with fish oil and decreased postpartum depression – some prenatal vitamins used after delivery now have large doses of fish oil due to this research. I read one article that says it decreases suicide rates in depressed people in general. I have also seen some research that it has anti-inflammatory effects – so that is quite possible a plus for your eyes.

Surely, it is one thing my PCP has me doing for my cholesterol and HDL/LDL (that are off balance currently since my hypoT dip a couple months ago).

The big warning is to be sure it is fish oil from the fish’s body and not the liver – because the liver has what can be toxic doses of vitamin A. Outside of watching for that – sounds like it is likely to be a positive for many of the things that can complicate Graves. I did read in one book that it needs to be 3 grams a day – most pills I have seen are 1,000 mg – 1,500 mg/day. Cathy

PS – FYI – 1 gm = 1,000 mg so three 1,000 mg pills = the 3 grams the one author recommends (Healing without Freud or Prozac was the book I read). Cathy

    Good Morning,
Has anyone with TED tried taking Omega three supplements during the course of the active phase? If so did you notice a difference in how your eyes felt? I’ve been taking flaxseed and fish omega’s for a couple of weeks. It seems I do notice some relief, mostly with the "tethering" sensation in my eyes. I also have Raynaud’s syndrome and I have read that fish oil is good for that as well because it helps with circulation. I would be interested to hear about others’ experiences and input on taking supplements for TED.
    Best,
    Amanda

Thanks Cathy!I knew to watch out for mercury in the fish oil, but I didn’t know that about the vitamin A in the fish oil.
I will make sure to check the labels and manufacturer for which part of the fish the oil comes from.

    Hi Amanda
My eye Dr also suggested omega 3, and I take 2000mgs of Flax seed oil daily. It is supposed to increase the viscosity of your tears, as TED makes your tears less viscose=dry eyes. The flax seed oil doesn’t taste as bad as the fish oil, and does not have the risks of fish products. I also use a OTC product called Celluvisc made by Allergen. They are preservative free, single dose eye drops. I use them at night before I sleep, and it does help my eyes feel better. I hope you are feeling better soon. Susan

Susan, I have tried lots of different drops most of which seemed to make my eyes more dry. I have been using Genteal ointment at night, it works, but it’s a bugger to put in. I will try what you are using. Thanks!

Is it dangerous if I take more Omega 3 pills than the bottle says? The bottle says 3 per day, but sometimes I take 4 or 5 if I judge that my Omega 6 intake was higher that day (striving to keep a 1:2 Omega3:Omega6 balance). Is this dangerous?

Hello – I would check with your doctor on this, but here is some info from the National Institutes of Health. (You will need to click your browser’s "back" button to return to the boards after viewing).

    http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/drug … l/993.html

This article notes that among other things, high doses (more than 3 grams per day) can keep blood from clotting and can reduce the body’s ability to fight infection.
