I really urge newcomers to go back and read as many of the old postings as they can. I see many questions that were just answered recently. I know its kind of a pain since there are so many! There is a lot to be learned in most of them.
Meanwhile, there is work being done on the possibility of setting up a more extensive FAQ (frequently asked question) page to answer the most common questions.
