Has anyone else experienced this? I finally got into the Endocrinologist I had mentioned in my previous “I’m back ” post. Just love this dr and am so glad to be back in the area.

Anyways, I’ve had discoloration (loss of pigmentation) on my body (all over) and asked her yesterday what it was. I find out it is Universal Vitiligo, another autoimmune disease. Seriously? Is it that easy to get other autoimmune diseases once you have one (i.e. Graves for all of us)? I guess I did not fully understand when I was diagnosed with Graves years ago that I could get something else. Considering I have (or in my case had) a ton of freckles and now its so noticeable on my arms and legs the pigment disappearing . I know there are treatments to lesson the look but not sure I want to put some steroid on my arms and legs just to have it “look” better. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this? Just curious is all.

Hi, your assessment, your concerns about the treatments are valid and well founded. My understandings about autoimmune diseases, is that if a person has one, there is some tendency to be susceptible to have another one. BUT I have no idea if this is a valid, evidence based, fact. It may be just an easy thing to say. All the genetic things are still things that not well understood.

I had a childhood friend with Universal Vitiligo, but as time passed, everyone got used to it, and she has moved on with her life. Teenage years were hardest. Have lost track of her now. I read the Mayo Clinic website for diagnosis (you doctor is probably right) and treatment. It is an ailment where lots of opportunists are out there to have you pay a lot of money for treatments that do not work, and are frequently dangerous. You are right, if you do use steroid ointment, you cannot “live” on it the rest of your life, and it comes with its’ own side effects.

Re weight, good job cutting down on junk food. Anyone I know, has had the most help, and succeeded in a a healthy way, with WW.

Hello – I recall that we’ve had a few other posters mention vitiligo in recent months. You can use the “Search Posts” feature to do a keyword search. (You do have to be logged in to do a search).
