Has anyone ever heard of this?
Thought I was in the cold phase…scheduled decompression surgery for March…now hot phase is back and chances are surgery will be rescheduled….feels extra swollen..red, gritty and they look terrible…really ugly (which is nothing new)

I wonder if the supplements have anything to do with it?
I’m taking a ultra mega multivitamin with minerals 2xs/day….Silica 1x/day, wild salmon fish oil complex (I “heard” fish oil is good for the eyes) and I just started taking a vitamin b complex 1x/day.

The depression is really hard cause it seems to be getting worse but I cover it well…kind of suffer in silence.

Hello – Wow, I’m sorry to hear this!

I’m not familiar with a specific supplement that can aggravate TED, but I would have one of your docs take a look at all of those supplements. Large amounts of iodine (which can be found in some vitamin/mineral supplements) can definitely aggravate thyroid issues, although I haven’t heard of this triggering eye problems. For me, sodium is a major trigger for eye issues, so that might be worth checking out as well.

Certainly this is a disappointing setback, so it’s natural to feel some disappointment/depression. However, if you feel you are sliding into clinical depression, *please* ask for a referral to a specialist. Here’s some info from the Mayo clinic:

    Thanks Kimberly,

My pill bottle says Levothyroxin “Sodium” 100mcg. I feel like a mad person trying to figure this out.

    One more question,

Can my family doc test for TSI if my endo refuses?

Thanks again for your patience with me…sorry to be such a bother

Hello – I’m *not* aware of replacement hormone like levothyroxine having an impact on TED.

I suspect the actual amount of sodium in replacement hormone is very small. (EDIT: there are 1,000 mcg in one milligram – and even 1,000 *milligrams* of sodium per day is considered a low sodium diet). When I mentioned sodium, I was referring more to processed and restaurant foods that are loaded with sodium as a preservative. There are certain chain restaurants that literally pack 3 days worth of sodium into a single meal. If I eat at one, I pretty much *know* I will wake up with swollen eyes in the morning if I eat there for dinner!

    Take care!

I’m sorry too – TED should be like double jeopardy, one shouldn’t have to go through it more than once! Or even once for that matter. I have heard that being hypo can aggravate TED and depression – have you had thyroid levels run recently to make sure you aren’t around the bottom of the range?

I take fish oil sometimes, Nordic Naturals and felt good about the info on their website that there was a very low max amount of iodine in the oil (not more than 2.0mcg/g) – maybe you could call the manufacturer of your fish oil to be sure?
