Hi, it’s been ages since I’ve posted because I’ve been feeling GREAT! However, all my tests in the past several months have shown my T4 as completley normal and my TSH as still hyper. Why is this? What should I do? My regular doctor is stumped, and thinks I should go see an endo, but they are too expensive and never seem to have anything new to say. If anyone has any insight. Please email me at heatherjohanna@hotmail.com or hjohanna@cats.ucsc.edu

thank you so much…I need some help. :)

    Hi Heather–

When we’ve been hyper awhile, the TSH can be slow to respond when thyroid levels normalize. My TSH was undetectable for over 4 months after I was hypo and on replacement hormone following my RAI, even though my Free T4 levels were low and the TSH should have been high.

It’s also possible to have a low TSH with a “normal” T4, if the T4 is really too high for YOU (subclinical hyperthyroidism). There are other possibilities, but only a doctor who has your records and can examine you can determine why this is happening in your case.

I highly recommend you consult an endocrinologist who treats many thyroid patients, since you say your regular doctor doesn’t understand this. (Generally this is a good idea for most of us anyway.)

    Best wishes,

Hi Heather – I have a low TSH, but normal T3 and T4. I, on the other hand, feel great and my endo is just monitoring me. He is not prescribing any medication or recommending RAI as long as I feel well.

I’ve had my second RAI treatment 8 months ago and went hypo after 2 months . Since then I’ve taken Synthyroid building it up to 125 micro gr daily and 5 months ago lowering it to 100 microgr. as the TSH showed slightly hyper. My last bloodtest showed a low TSH of 0.3 and fT4 in normal range.
I’ m feeling a few symptoms of hyper again, slightly eleveated heart rate and weight loss to the point of underweight. My endo is ordering a T3 test to see if the synthyroid dose has to be lowered. What’s the meaning of this low TSH when the fT4 is in normal range. I’m wondering if someone has the experience of lowering the Synthyroid dose after going hypo from RAI .

I am currently on 1. Levoxyl and 15mg of Cytomel divided into 3 doses. i feel great on the cytomel and this dosage of Levoxyl but my TSH level is .045. I know that my endo will want to cut me back to a smaller dose but I do not feel good when my TSH gets above .1. I like taking this dosage of medicine and I do not have shakes, sweats, or any hyper signs. On the contrary I work productively, exercise, eat right and generally am in a good stable mood. When the TSH gets above .1 I gain weight, bloat, tired, hands fall asleep, depression, etc. i changed endos this summer and I am hoping that this endo will understand how I feel when my TSH gets near a “normal range”. I tried a lower dosage for a year and gained 15 pounds being in the normal range and just about wrecked my career and home life. Does anyone else feel better with a low TSH as opposed to a “normal” reading of TSH? And does anyone else out there feel better when the Cytomel is added?

My TSH is in the normal range (1.83 – July 5) and am struggling with leg pain and aches and weak muscles plus fatigue to name a few. Off all medication and looking back felt good last summer when my TSH was around 3.5 (while taking PTU). My endo said most of her patients do better under 1.0. I haven’t been between 0 and 1 long enough but feel I’m probably best there too. Just toughing it for the time being to see what my thyroid wants to do. No bloodwork scheduled until October but may have family doctor do some before then to see what’s going on. Hate my return to achy, zombie land! Good luck keeping your levels down if that’s what feels best for you.
