    Is it true that GD patients should limit or not consume dairy products? When I asked about diet suggestions, my endo said there’s not anything I should specifically avoid and should just follow a healthy diet – fruits, veggies, lean protein, whole grains, etc. like the food pyramid. Just want to make sure that I’m doing everything I can to help myself.

    Any research on specific diets? Or just trial and error?

    I heard that same comment on this site Emily, so I was looking at Soy milk to put on my cereal in the morning and when reading the label, SOY MILK HAS SEA SALT and my understanding is that we shouldn’t have Sea Salt either. When answering Emily’s question can anyone tell me what they use to put on cereal in the mornings or a brand of Soy Milk that doesn’t contain Sea Salt?? THANKS SO MUCH…I’m a cereal girl and ready to give up or cut back on dairy products to help myself and this could help Emly too !! <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />

    A friend of mine is allergic to dairy and doesn’t like soy milk so she uses apple juice. I’ve found that even the no sugar added varieties are too sweet for me. Maybe rice milk or almond milk would be a better alternative? I haven’t had either so I can’t comment on taste.

    While I was hyper I developed lactose intolerance. I think this may be why some doctors say limit dairy if it starts to bother you. It went away when I was euthyroid on medication. I have had RAI and an now waiting to see if the intolerance goes away again.

    Somehow ewmb I’m not surprised by anything this disease causes, including lactose intolerance. Great information, THANK YOU!! Sue

    For the most part, our reactions to hyperthyroidism are very personal ~ not everyone develops the same sensitivities or has the same symptoms.

    I have never heard a blanket restriction against dairy for Graves’ patients, or anything other than "stay away from seaweed" that can be fully substantiated with evidence. Also, the diet restrictions are only meant for patients who still have a functioning thyroid ~ anyone who has ablated the thyroid through either RAI or surgery shouldn’t need to worry about seaweed.

    I think it’s possible that many of us have sensitivities we are unaware of, and we just get used to eating the way "Mom fed us," so we don’t take the extra step of figuring out what we feel like without this or that in our diet.

    My advice would be to do the same thing doctors suggest for our children ~ if you feel you’re having a reaction to one particular food, eliminate it completely and see how you feel. Reintroduce it, by little bits, and see how you feel. It’s time consuming, and you only want to do one substance at a time to make sure you’re getting good information, but it’s worth it!

    A friend (one who does NOT have Graves’) recently decided to eliminate meat and dairy, all at once. She immediately felt healthier, and six months later, many of the symptoms she’d been chasing with her doctor had completely gone away.

    It’s worth finding out what helps YOU, but I’m not convinced we can decide for each other what we "must" remove from our diet (or include).

    I may be able so add a little. I was put on a low iodine diet before my scan (my doc is old school) – and milk has a lot of iodine. I was not allowed to touch dairy for a month. I did some research on milk alternatives – coconut milk (you can buy it in cans) and hemp milk (I found it as a boxed liquid) were great substitutes. Of course, they lack the calcium so don’t forget your supplements!
