I’m new here. I had orbital decompression surgery and several eye lid surgeries (several years ago) but my eyes still do not close completely at night. I tried elastic bandages, eye masks, tap etc., all very uncomfortable.
Does anyone know of a comfortable bandage mask or product that will place enough pressure on the eyes to close while sleeping?
Thank you.
I wish I could help you. I tried everything. Either it would fall off, or I would rip it off while sleeping. When I wore a mask, I had real problems. The pressure of the mask left my vision blurry for the first hour I was awake. I ended up having the surgery and that has worked for me.
I haven’t had to deal with this, but I remember some correspondence about this ~ there may be a thread in the old bulletin posts. In any event, I think the advice I’ve seen is to use specific tape ~ sticky enough to hold, but not enough to pull when you remove it. I can’t say I recall exactly which it refers to, but I believe it’s paper tape. In addition to that, I believe it may not be completely necessary to have your eyes shut by the mask, but more importantly, keeps air from getting to the portions of the eye that are exposed. I think the configuration I recall is gel in the eyes, vaseline around the outside of the eye area, saran wrap on that, taped with paper tape, and then a sleep mask. Sounds like a lot of work, but if it keeps your corneas from being damaged, it’s definitely worth it.
I hope that helps a little…
Dear Carollast,
I have been taping my eyes for years–too many to count. I have been through the micropore tape, patches, saran wrap, and anything else I can think of. Everything worked–for a while. When I began looking like a racoon with the eye patches, I was absolutely convinced the manufacturer had changed the formula for the adhesive and made it too strong. I finally figured out that my skin was getting older and thinner (another of life’s little wake-up calls!)
About three years ago, I was sitting in on a wound management class (yawn!), when the presentor began talking about a silicone tape that was used on infants and the truly elderly, and did not cause irritation. I really perked up at that point. I met with her after the presentation, and explained what I needed tape for. She gave me some, I tried it, and have become a convert! Another nice thing about it is that it can be repositioned, and actually re-used for several nights.
The product is called MEPITAC, and is distributed by Molnlycke Corp. I think it is made in Sweden. I believe their website is "www.molnlyckeus.com". I will e-mail the person I know, and ask how we can get the purchasing information.
I now take samples of the tape, and literature, to everything I attend. The doctors that now know about it and saying really good things about it.
I tried to search the archives for a longthy post I once did about taping eyes, but couldn’t find it. I will keep trying. -
