Hi all well new to this forum, was Diagnosed with Graves about 2 months ago , after my first Diagnosis in Feb while I was in Afghanistan of Hyperthyroidism. Well went in and took the RAI today for the Ablution. Hoping this all gets better tired of feeling the way I have for the past few months, although I have heard success stories and horror stories. just curious how many other members of the Armed forces do we have here?

metalsrfr – Hopefully, you will get some additional responses, but I just wanted to welcome you to the forum.

There are quite a few members here who have chosen RAI as their treatment option. You can use the “Search Posts” feature for “RAI”, “Radioiodine”, “I-131”, etc. to read some of their stories.

Take care — and many thanks for your service.

Thanks Kimberly I’m just kind of looking around and reading right now , and trying to get my wife convinced to read some of the stuff on here she is having a real hard time with all of my health problems and the fact i wasn’t given a choice of treatment just told I will do this if I want to stay in the Army.

I am hoping you hear from other service members. And thank you for your service. ****Glad you got an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Arizonaguy (I am not checking back to be sure I have the name exactly right, but he posted a few minutes ago) also just had his RAI today. Maybe he has been in the service. Even if not, you have a lot in common, with both of you having RAI.

Ok so after reading quite a few others stories, and the causes of GD, It occurred to me my situation and having the hyperthyroidism Diagnosis in Afghanistan High Tempo, High Stress, constant hurry up get it done and on to the next mission. Looking back at all the times my temper got the best off me and I made someone else cry on the flight line cause I blew up like a ticking time bomb at them, there is for sure a huge psychological effect from GD.

Yes, stress is believed to be one possible trigger for autoimmune diseases in those who are genetically predisposed. (Other possible triggers include physical injury, viral illnesses, or environmental factors).

Once we do get Graves’, that absolutely affects emotions, memory, and concentration. This is a nice bulletin from the GDATF that talks about this connection:
