Hi! I’m new to this forum. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in June of last year. I took my meds until October. I lost my insurance and stopped the medication. Got my insurance back and went to the doctor after 6 months of not taking meds. Wanted to go back as currently I am extremely sleepy and have no energy.

Go in, Dr. tells me my eyes are bulging, my pulse is over 100, i’ve gained 20 lbs and he’s disappointed that I stopped but said I was lucky. Let’s see where your levels are at.

He calls today and says my T levels are normal and he’s not going to start the pill regimen again. We’ll just watch it and he’ll see me again in two months.

I am totally confused. I still have no energy, all the above signs he pointed out and my levels are normal???

Somehow this doesn’t seem right to me? Thoughts? Get another opinion?

    Thanks,
    Kimberly

Hello and welcome! We are fellow patients here, not docs, but it sounds like it would be helpful to get a hard copy of your labs so that you can see for yourself where your Free T4, T3, and TSH are compared to the “Normal” range. Symptoms like fatigue and weight gain are actually more associated with hypo than hyper, but you definitely need to get some answers!

Your doctor is right that it is fortunate that you did not go severely hyper after stopping the meds. If you do end up going back on the meds and run into insurance issues again, definitely check out one of the free/low-cost clinics that are available in the U.S. rather than stopping treatment completely. You can get info here; you have to scroll down a bit to see the “Find a Health Center” Box.
