Hi everyone, I have been reading everyone’s stories and decided to post my own in the hopes that someone on here can help out. This is my story in a nutshell.
My endo gave me the option of RAI or meds, but I chose RAI due to the fact that I was concerned about the chest pains and palpitations I had been having. I ended up in the er about a month ago with high bp and heart rate about 130 (my normal is 80 bpm), so after I answered the nurse’s medical history questions about my family history of hyperthyroidism (my mom as well as aunts, uncles and cousins on my mom’s side) they ordered a thyoid panel. The results came back indicating hyperthyroidism: TSH: 0.03, total thyroxine around 15.5. I went to my pa next who put me on atenolol which was working pretty good the first day I took it in combination with the cardizem the er dr had prescribed me. My PA ordered an uptake scan and sonogram, which indicated an uptake of 30% after 6 hrs and 47 % at the 24 hr mark. I was referred to an endo but had to wait like 3 weeks for an appointment. When I fianlly got in to see her, she confirmed the diagnosis and ordered a free t-4 and TSH receptor antibody. My free T-4 wasn’t too bad, 1.93, but still higher than normal and my antibodies were off the charts at 10.11.
I chose to go with RAI due to family history as well, since my mom was declared euthyroid by her endo a year after getting RAI but had previously had a bad experience after a year of being on tapazole.
To make a long story short, I took 10 milicuries of the RAI on Tuesday morning.
I will start on Tapazole in a few days so hopefully that will help withthe symptoms while the RAI does it’s job.
I was fine the first two days but around noon today I started experiencing anxiety and a roller coaster of emotion from sadness to the point of crying for no reason along with a pain deep inside the left side of my chest, almost in my back, which was worse when taking a very deep breath, which of course I have to do often due to shortness of breath. It got better after I took my propranolol but it’s still bothering me. I was very close to going down to the er. I have had chest pains on and off but these were pretty bad. BP and pulse are fine though.
The only other RAI side effect I’ve had so far has been really bad allergies all day yesterday which were cleared up by this morning.
So for now I am fine except for the chest pains…I would appreciate any advice or encouragement you guys can give me ” title=”Smile” />Good afternoon Victor
I was diagnosed 2 wks ago and had the RAI on Monday. Don’t know the dosage but the nuclear tech told me it was a childs dose. I hope thats a good thing. Anyhow, I felt nothing except I was still tired. Hate to say it but I loved sleeping alone as I finally got a good nights sleep. My poor husband, as we have only been married a year. Haven’t had much of an appetite but have been very thirsty. Had a very minor sore throat last night after dinner. My red wine seemed to make it worse. Started taking meth…… yesterday and I’m feeling a little less anxious and my head is actually clearing up. I hate the brain fog!
You mentioned an allergy problem. I have contact dermatitis and had a breakout mon night after the RAI. This hasn’t happened in a long time. Not sure if the RAI triggered some of my allergies but it has cleared up pretty quickly (which isn’t normal)
I feel much better this afternoon – almost normal. Have faith. Always remember "this too shall pass"
Hope you are feeling better…………..
GayleHang in there victor I was told that with the graves we have hyper sensitive nerve endings and we feel our hear beat. If it gets bad call the endo and see what they say. I am 8 months post RAI and I still get the chest pains. They say it most likely is my stomach which makes since I do get GERD acid reflux. I was also told that once we get regulated it goes away. Still trying to climb back up to eurthoid from going hypo from the RAI but I am an unusual case.
