    Hi all –

Got a new dx of Graves this week. Not surprising, since my mom has it and I have every symptom she did.

Anyway, my endo started me on methimazole, 20mg daily. I took my first does today at noon. By 2pm I had severe chills, all over body aches, and a fever of 101.4. Wondering if this is a coincidental onset of some other illness or related to the med.

Curious if anyone else has had this type of effect. Doc said he’s not seen this type of reaction before but anything is possible. He did say that if I felt better in 6-8hrs it was likely the med. I am 4 hrs out and feeling a tad better.

    Thanks for your feedback!

I have heard of people experiencing allergic reactions, but I’m not sure the symptoms they experienced match yours. My recollection is that those reactions were more classically allergy symptoms such as hives and itching, not so much flu-like, but perhaps you’ll get more input on that. In any case, I hope you feel better, and welcome to the Graves’ community — you’ll find LOTS of support here, glad you found us!

Hello – Patients on anti-thyroid drugs who have symptoms of sore throat or fever are advised to get their white blood cell count checked. A rare, but serious side effect of the meds is a severe lowering of WBC count.

I’ve never heard of *any* other cases of this side effect kicking in within just two hours (and the issue usually comes with a sore throat), but it wouldn’t hurt to get the test done and err on the side of caution!

    Thanks, Kimberly!

Turns out it was just a crazy coincidence and I had a virus. I know about the warnings re: fever/white count but thanks for making sure I have important information!!
