Hi Barb! I had RAI seven years ago. Within months I went hypo, was put on a thyroid replacement, and have been doing fine since. I did continue to have problems with my eyes, but that doesn’t mean that you will. Some people hit the hypo stage faster and harder than others. It takes some time to adjust your medication, but in the end you will feel better. For me, it was the way to go.

Hi Barb, I had RAI in Nov. of 95, just alittle over a year ago. I’m glad I did, it was the right choice for me. I am feeling better, but not back to normal yet. I have had a bad time of getting my synthroid dose regulated, along with the fact that I hated my endo so my internist was trying to do it. I now have an appt. next week with a new endo, and I believe I’ll be doing much better soon. The only draw back to RAI that I can see is the length of time it takes some of us to get regulated. But it will get regulated. For me I new of people that chose to go with Tapazole and PTUs and medications and hoped for a remission. So far I haven’t found anyone yet who has had a remission for more than a few years, then they go hyper agian, and basiclly have to start from the beginning again. I’m 47 and frankly don’t want to take all those medications just to have a few years of remission and end up sick again and probably getting the RAI anyway. And I didn’t want to deal with this when I’m older and may have opther health concerns. Am I making since here? So to sum it up, I’m glad I did the RAI. Just be practical about it and don’t expect overnight results. It’ll take time but you’ll get straighted out eventually. Sorry for the long winded message, but you sounded like this was urgent. All of this is just from my experience and opinons mind you. You’ll get lots more, I’m sure. Trish;snowbound in NY too.
I was diagnosed with GD in ’91. Well controlled with PTU and weaned off
meds entirely in 5/95. Now hyper again and referred to endocrinologist.
Every message I read from patients treated with RAI makes is sound so
awful! Is there anyone with a positive experience out there?? -
