Hello and welcome – We are fellow patients here, not doctors, so your child’s own doctor (or perhaps your doctor) would be in the best position to give you advice on this issue. It’s believed that childhood x-rays can increase the risk of developing thyroid cancer; however, if you are trying to diagnose another serious medical issue, sometimes these x-rays are necessary.
The American Thyroid Association released some guidelines a couple of years ago on x-rays and thyroid cancer, and they recommend the following:
1. Ask the doctor to explain to you the risks and benefits of any x-ray procedure.
2. Find out exactly what information the doctors are looking for with the x-ray and ask if there is another test that can provide this same information.
