If you are taking Tapazole and that has brought your levels into the normal range, then by definition at this moment you are not hyper. If your levels are not in the normal range yet, then exercise would be a concern.
Clear exercise with your doctor first, but if they say it’s okay, then keep these things in mind. When you are hyper, your muscles waste away, and with exercise they waste even more. Once you have come out of the hyper state, the wasting is not happening any more, but it takes time for the muscle tissue to return, and once it does, it is soft, “baby” muscle that needs very gentle conditioning. You can’t “bulk up” in a hurry, in other words. Low weight, few reps until you feel the muscles getting stronger. The physical therapist that spoke at the conference two years ago said to exercise the muscle until it feels tired, then stop. So if you take it easy, you should be able to work your muscles back up to where they used to be.
Keep in mind that your thyroid hormone levels may still be changing — excessive cramping can be caused by low thyroid hormone levels, for example — so be aware that you may need to get your levels checked whenever you feel something unusual happening.
Strength to you (literally), warrior!

NGDF Assistant Online FacilitatorHi, I was diagnosed with GD hyper in Aug 02. I was put on tapazole which is working pretty well. Now that I am feeling a little better I want to start working out again but since I am hyper I am scared to lose anymore weight. I was 114 lbs and I am 5’8″, i have gained about 10 lbs and want to keep them. I have heard alot about the muscle tone loss, does anyone know if it will come back once you are recieving treatment? Or will my muscles get smaller the more I work out? thanks.
Your muscle can come back. I’m like you, thin and not needing to get any thinner! Working out is the best advice, I think. Keep it up.
Ski is right — It didn’t compute for me that you might still have the hyper issues to deal with. Exercising while hyper is not advisable. I forgot to mention that exercise was banned for me by my doctor until I went hypo. Of course once I was hypo I didn’t feel up to it, but once I was post RAI and stabilized on Synthroid, working out was a great idea. It helps you regain the bone & muscle mass you may have lost while being hyper.
