I have been reading posts about muscle cramping pre- and post- thyroid treatment. I have been on same dose synthroid for about 1 year. But, every now and then still go through the pre-thyroidectomy calf cramps. Still have muscle weakness, esp. arms.
Has anyone experienced these problems long after supposedly ‘cured’?
Hi SallyB62, I’m so sorry you are going through the pre-ttx calf cramps. I am still on ATD, so I wouldn’t be able to give you the answers you need. However, I would think that this is related to your synthroid. Have you done any labs recently? Also, I know that synthroid is just a commercial brand. There are other brands for levothyroxine, so it wouldn’t hurt to address this to your doctor.
I am waiting to see a surgeon in early Jan to go for a TTX, hopefully, and in the meantime, I’ve been doing a lot of researches on the consequences of this surgery and having to live without this organ for the rest of my life.
I hope this problem goes away soon.
Take care!

Hello – Agree with Shakira7 that a set of labs would be helpful, as muscle cramps appear to be more of an issue when levels are out of range (either hyper or hypo). It might also be a good idea to keep a running notebook of all lab results, with a note as to whether you were feeling symptomatic when the labs were drawn.
Hope you can get some relief!
Hi all, New to the forum. Just wanted to say that when my T3, T4 and TSH were out of whack I got cramps in my calfs so bad I would end up crying. Never heard of the medications you are taking or I just can’t remember (have a problem with that since diagnosed). I take 15mg of methimazole a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), did not always be that way.
Muscle weakness definitely in the upper arms and my thighs, many years now. I think it depends on the amount of muscle mass you lost when Hyperthyroid, it takes a long time to gain that muscle mass back. I feel way weaker physically than I did before getting Grave’s disease.
Hi,
I have had muscle cramps in my calf since I was a teenager my Mum said it was growing pains. I take a multivitamin every day and have had no muscle cramps for two years.
I now suffer from muscle weakness and I have always suspected that it is due to GD. It has been 5 years since I was diagnosed and I have lost a lot of my strength and can’t seem to get it back. -
