New to this. I am on methimazole for the past 2week. I have stated to get a sore throat and horseness about 2days after, it is getting worse now I am starting to get itchy. Went to Endo and she said that is not from the thyroid. Reading all night and I am wondering if it might be the meds. Any thoughts? Oh and all of my normal blood panels are changing not just the thyroid panel.
Do you have a rash? Lots of people have had reactions to generic methimazole over the years. I was allergic to one of the fillers in the drug. You can read my old posts, search for posts with ewmb, and read the threads that went with that. When I got off the generic methimazole and went on the brand name my "allergy" went away after several weeks. You should let your pharmacist know. They can research for you, or you can get some info on the internet, which ones have povidone in them. This is a filler that is in in lots of medications not just methimazole. You can google the letters and numbers on your tablet with the name of it in the images section and a lot of times it will come up and you can get the manufacturers name then. If you can’t find this or your pharmacist isn’t helpful you can ask your doctor or nurse to call your local drug information center for you.
Good luck and hope the itching stops soon.

Jules – Just to double-check, your doctor did do a White Blood Cell count test, correct? Sore throat *can* be a sign of a serious side effect with the meds, although my guess is that it’s pretty unlikely that you would have this issue two days in. As for the itching, ewmb has some good thoughts. Also, I find that some patients get some relief when their levels start to drop into the “normal” territory and their dosage is reduced. Others may have success switching from Methimazole to PTU or vice versa.
Update the WBC came back in normal range. 8/27 I woke up with extream sore throat rushed to hospital admitted due to sever inflamation in the throat hoarsness. No one had me on the mmi for 2days throat felt great on third day was told ok to take mmi with in 2hrs throat was hurting. Told to stop mmi no ptu put an atavan and long acting beta blocker. Waiting on insurance to change and the have to make the choice surgery or rai.
Also after not taking meds for 2days in hospital the WBC was 14000 they said that thE meds were holding the WBC in the normal range becuse upon checking in the er WBC was normal
This update is from a long time ago, right? Not the past few days? Just checkin’!
ShirleyYour recent posting on Sept 14th was I believe an update on what was going on July 27th. You were taken off methimazole—not switched to PTU and put on Ativan and long acting beta blocker.
It all seems to make sense what you doctor has done—taking into account what is known about the possible cross reactions of the side effects which may occur when switching from one antithyroid drug to another.
Minor reactions do occur in 15% of those receiving methimazole and 10% with PTU. According to one doctor (David Cooper) “if a rash develops it will sometimes resolve spontaneously (even with continued use) with or without the use of antihistamines to treat itching. Although switching to the alternative drug is another possibility, the cross-reaction rate may be as high as 50%. Some patients may simply elect to stop the offending drug and accept a definitive form of therapy.”In the case of reduced white blood cell count switching is not recommended because of a cross reaction.
I hope you are successful in getting the change you need in your insurance. If you have more questions or wish to speak to me directly send me an email Gravesdiseasefd@gmail.com with your questions and contact information.

Website: http://www.NGDF.orgJust for clarity regarding a drug.
Regarding the 9/14 post. The drug is ATIVAN. (not Atavan) The generic name is lorazapam.
In reference to today’s post. Same comment. Misunderstanding about name of drug. Ataman not a drug.
Ativan is an anti-anxiety drug. There are quite a few recent posts on this drug.
Thanks, Shirley -
