I was new on this site. I was diagnosed of Hyperthyroidisim which is overactive thyroid last July 29, 2013. I was taking Methimazole 5mg 3 times a day and for my high blood am taking Bystolic 5mg 1 a day. I have a question, I read from google about Methimazole, how true that if you are taking Methimazole you can acquire a terrible illness like Multi Sclerosis, Glaucoma, Heart Problem, Tinnitus etc, What are the right food and diet for having hyperthyroidisim, I am taking Methimazole for 2 months..Hoping for a favorable reply. Thank you.

Hello and welcome – There is a ton of information out there on the Internet, and unfortunately, much of it is bogus.

To my knowledge, none of the issues that you mentioned are associated with Methimazole. There *are* some potential side effects, though; this web site has some good info:

Also, when you picked up your prescription at the pharmacy, you should have been given a sheet that explains potential side effects. Yes, there are risks to methimazole (as with *any* prescription med), but the risks of letting hyperthyroidism go untreated are much greater.

As for diet, you will hear all sorts of conflicting recommendations. Most docs will recommend avoiding major sources of iodine, such as supplements and the seaweed wrap that comes with sushi. Many patients also choose to minimize their intake of processed foods with unpronounceable ingredients and instead focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods.
