This question is primarily for the facilitators but I welcome any and all responses.
Is there a fairly recent ‘approved and accepted’ study done on the risks and occurrences /severity of negative side effects of long term (> 2 years) use of ATDS.
My endo is quite strongly against such use – even though I have stabilized with good lab results using 15 mg per day.
And I can’t see the benefit of either RAI or TT (or like the cost of either),when just the medication seems to be working fine.
Thank you !
Hello – The latest guidance from the American Thyroid Association and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (which is located in the “Treatment Options” thread in the announcements section of the forum) actually does leave the door open for longer-term use of anti-thyroid drugs if that is the patient’s preference.
We’ve also had doctors in three recent patient education events (Chicago and Baltimore last year and Boston this month) mention that long-term use of ATDs is acceptable as long as there are no side effects – so this seems to be becoming a more common practice in the medical community
The one study that I’m aware of that looked at long-term use was Azizi et al from 2005, although the dosing was a little smaller than what you are taking (2.5-10 mg):

Hope this helps!
Thanx, Kimberly.
I was at the Boston Conference where that discussion occurred – I wanted some specific data and the article provided it. My endo still feels that the potential negative side effects could happen at time without warning and for that reason is very much against it.
btw – you may want to check the Treatment Options links – I had no luck in finding the guidelines document.

Sorry, looks like that web site was re-arranged; the link should be working now.
Thanks for asking this question Brondack, because I’m also interested in long term use until possibly going into remission.
I know that several people are on atds long term…and I remember seeing that atds are used long term in Japan and other countries.
