If you take ATDs and it makes your liver enzymes go up, followed by going off ATDs, does your liver recover and your enzymes go down??
Be sure to ask your doctor, but the answer is yes. THis is my anecdotal experience from looking at lots of labs in my work.
ShirleyJust to add to Shirley’s response, the medical guidelines recommend weekly testing for patients who have to discontinue ATDs due to liver issues.
Referral to a specialist is recommended in the *unlikely* event that the liver function tests don’t return to normal after stopping the drug.
Hopefully, Alexis will chime in as well, as she had this experience.
After 16 days on the generic Tapizole, my liver enzymes were dangerously elevated. Last week’s blood test finally show them back to normal. So it took my body 3 1/2 months to recover from 16 days of medication.
Hope this helps.
Wow, that’s a long time for recovery of 16 days on meds. I’m glad they’re back to normal now…
Thanks for your input!!
Hi,
Yes, after 7 weeks on methimazole (5 mg a day), my liver enzymes were 8 times the normal amount. I stopped the meds. immediately and had labs done 3 days later to make sure they were coming down (which they were). I don’t remember how long it took for them to be completely normal- maybe a month? My general dr. ordered an abdominal ultrasound to make sure everything was okay (which it was).
