    Hi All,

I’ve heard that soy can cause problems for people who are hypothyroid and using synthetic hormone so I’m wondering if I should avoid it. Does anyone have any information on this? I’ll see my GP in August and my Endo in December but thought I’d see if anyone here knows anything or has experience with this.

    Hi,

When I first diagnosed I was on a high soya diet to help my asthma. The first endo I was seen by advised me to refrain from soya products and I was hyper at the time.

I think soy is one of the substances that can affect our absorption if it is ingested close to the time we take our thyroid hormone replacement. Separating the two by several hours should be enough to avoid the reaction, I think. Talk with your pharmacist next chance you get.

Yes, excess soy can hamper absorption. The question actually came up a few years ago. The manufactures of the replacement hormone pointed out that infants on soy formula (meaning drinking it all the time) would have problems absorbing thyroid hormone.

I think the key word here is "excess". If you are taking your horones by themselves and away from soy intake, you should be fine. If you are a committed vegetarian who is using a LOT of soy, tell your doctor so that the two of you can come up with a plan.
