Could leg cramps while sleeping be related to either Graves, or PTU?? I have been waking up in the middle of the night, with excrucuating leg cramps. My joints are sore all the time too.
Thank you.. ” title=”Very Happy” />I had bad episodes off and on during my worst time with being very hyper. I also had a bad time when I was actually taking too much PTU and they had to cut my dose in half. I couldn’t stand up one morning and the water from the shower would make me wince in pain. Let your doctor know if it really becomes bad.

Joint pain can be due to either, though I think that’s listed as a side effect of PTU. Cramping can be from hypothyroid episodes, OR lack of potassium. Definitely speak with your doctor if either of these turn into a chronic problem.
I experience leg cramps so severe they cause me to rise early when the rest of my body would love to stay in bed. The cramps seem to get better after I am up for awhile. I am on the hypo side and have found the cramps are not due to lack of any minerals. Doctor never seems interested though.
now, everything is cramping.. If i look down, my neck cramps, and if i look over my shoulder my back cramps.. I am going to the doc on 11/30, and i will mention this all to him..

It was really bad the year before last and a friend told me to take calcium/magnesium and Vit D. That helped quite a lot but didn’t take it away entirely. I’ve stopped taking the calcium over the last few months and I’ve noticed the cramping is starting to get worse again in recent weeks. I think I’ll give the potassium a try this time.
I hope all goes well for you at the DR.’s and the cramping stops soon.
I started with leg cramps after being on methimazole for about five to six months…then it got into my biceps, neck and butt (there is nothing worse than butt cramps! ouch!)
I called my endo and told him about it. He dropped my methimazole down and had them add magnesium, calcium and postassium testing to my bloodwork, which all showed up normal. After reducing the methiz. they went away. They hurt, so make sure you talk to your endo about them. Good luck!
I got leg cramps when I went hypo on PTU. Once my PTU dose was lowered, it went away.
Check with you doctor ” title=”Wink” />
I had cramps so bad last weekend, I couldn’t get out of bed. I had charlie horses in BOTH LEGS all Friday night and Saturday, I had pain in my elbows from lifting my arms, pain in my wrists, pain in my back, pain in my neck so bad I couldn’t move it left or right, it was AWFUL. I was walking like someone 40 yrs. older than what I was, moaning and groaning (embarrassing). I saw my endocrinologist on Tuesday, my TSH was 7.65 and my T4 was 0.9. He believes my potassium is low so I’m eating pears and bananas b/c I already take mega doses of vitamins. Last time I was severely HYPO (32.5), I had the same symptoms. Me, I’ve been through this once before where I couldn’t get out of bed, the pain was so bad I couldn’t walk and so I just resign myself to Graves. I’ve found that in the last year and 1/2 I’ve had it, it manifests itself like a monster at times…good luck and let me know how you get along.
RIght after I had my RAI done I had excruciating cramping through my entire body. If I turned the wrong was stretched the wrong way even yawned funny. It was so bad that I cried and cried and cried. A little helpful advice, if you start cramping in your legs, walk…. The second you stop moving it tightens up more and gets worse. I found that if I pushed through it and didn’t let it completely tighten that it would go away faster. Once my levels were fixed the cramps stopped and my muscles strengthed up again. I feel your pain though and I hope that you will get through this quickly! Drink lots of water and if all else fails go see your specialist!
