    Hi,
I’ll need to take my son to have his lab done in two weeks. He has been on Methimazole for 3 weeks.
I am very confused when I looked at the test order paper yesterday (the doctor wrote 3 weeks ago) which has three boxes checked: Total T4, Total T3 and TSH. Should Free T4 & Free T3 be tested? Why test TSH since it may still remain suppressed? Should the test include liver enzymes? BWC? Do you remember what does your doctor test at these interval visits?
    Thanks!

I understand why you’re asking these questions. i think your doctor will have to answer them for you. If we tried to do that, we’d really be telling your doctor how to do his job, and that’s not appropriate here, so do ask him why he’s testing the total levels instead of the Free levels, etc. Then let us know what he says, okay?

Advice from another doctor: Once patient started ATD, Free T4 and T3 are commonly tested. TSH will not be indicative as it is still remaining suppressed (varies depending on individual).

Surely it does no harm to test TSH, since it remains suppressed only in some patients. Regardless, this is a call for each patient’s physician.
