    Hi All,

I was diagnosed with Graves one and a half year ago and am one of these rare persons who have a lot of difficulty stabilizing their FT4 values. I was ok for some months but since my TSH was still suppressed my endo increased the doseage a little bit just for 3 weeks, then back on the normal dose. I was feeling terrible so I had another labwork and my TSH was still suppressed but my FT4 too low (does not make much sense).
So my endo decreased my dose again and now I am on 2,5mg of methymazole mondays , wednesdays and fridays and having a few moments of despair. Everybody else looks so energetic and happy and just being requires too much energy for me. I drag myself at work and feel a bit depressive. It helps to know that I have an appointment on the 22d, luckily my endo said she wanted to see me before the holidays so I could be ok on those days.
ANyway, I just needed to whine a bit, at least this is a safe place for whining ;)

Hello – TSH can remain suppressed for quite some time in Graves’ patients; some researchers believe that this has to do with the Graves’ antibodies. Until the TSH does come up on its own, Free T4 and T3 will be much better benchmarks for your dosing.

Hopefully, you will see some improvement at your appointment later this month. And definitely keep copies of all your old lab work. The next time this doc wants to adjust dose based on TSH, remind her that last time you did this, your T4 crashed!

Hang in there – this will get better!

I don’t have advice, just commiseration. It sucks to be so tired and apathetic. It can feel too hard to answer an email or get the mail or take out the garbage. I’m over it also. I am feeling a little better right now after being very hyperthyroid again. I am going to do RAI and am hoping its a good decision. I was having trouble getting stabilized on methimazole.
I hope you feel better soon. I start to wonder if maybe I’m just lazy because everything is so hard. But I know it’s the Graves. I wish there was a magic, easy cure.

I wanted for a long time to thank you both for your support, but tme just flies. I wanted to gi ve you a quick update. Since december I have been trying to readjust my doseage. my FT4 went form 3.5 (normal range 0.7-1.76) in december to 2.5, then 2.17 and now I guess it is getting closer to normal range because since last week I have moments when I feel almost normal, which at this point actually feels weird, altuough I celebrate it everyday. But I am still loosing weight, for the first time in my life I feel unconfortable with my body, and that never happened when I was fat.
I managed to maintain the weight when I took holidays but as soon as I went back to work I started loosing weight again. Plus I developped diabetes so I cannot stuff myself. Wondering wether to ask for a sick leave but just the prospect of being cooked up at home by myself…
I am seriously thinking of TT, since I can’t have RAi (big goiter, Trabs 54…), I am scared of loosing my singing voice but I guess the longer I leave it, the higher the risk.

Hello – You are definitely dealing with lots of tough choices, including treatment options and how to deal with work!

We had a nutritionist speak at our 2009 conference in Charlotte, and for people who are losing weight too quickly, she recommended making sure you are (1) getting enough protein; (2) including a serving of healthy fat (nuts, avocado, cheese, or olive oil, etc.) with each meal; and (3) having a healthy snack in between meals. Of course, you will need to juggle this with the guidance that your doc gave you on managing your diabetes.

Thyroidectomy has its own risks and benefits, although this research might give you some comfort on the voice issues. Dr. Randolph presented at the educational event we hosted in Boston last year.

My latest Tsh test (3.39) is still in the normal range although its near the end of normal but they say i may not need any meds after all. it has stablized! I stil feel foggy headed and exhausted by noon..I do hot yoga 2 days a week and walk almost every day about 1-2 miles. After that I am done and worn out! I still get sinus drainage now and then but I think it may be allergies but not sure. I have never been allergic to pollen or the like but I think the RAI must’ve changed that. I have to rest but cannot sleep during the day.

I guess I should be thankful I still have some function of the thyroid although my RAI dosage was very small. The goiter has also shrunk about 80%. I have gained 5 lbs and feel tired a lot but I did also when I was Hyper. So I guess i am one of the lucky ones who doesn’t need any meds..It wil be 1 year as of May 9th since the RAI! I really can’t complain much at my age, I will be 62 in June. I am thankful its turned out good, didn’t realize this until i saw all the meds others have to take.

Hi Kimberly, I am finally regaining weight. I was considering scheduling a appointment with my endo, but this week I was happy because I regained 2 kg ( one of my colleagues says I am the only woman who is happy because she has gained weight). I knew I had to wait around 4 weeks after does change to go for new labs and it has been 4 weeks this week. I still get tired very easily but at least there is progress :)
