Newbie here, so will give a brief background.

Wife has had GD since early 20s (we have been together since our teens) and she is now 49. 3x PTU, then RAI (also in 20s), Synthroid since. No affect on eyes (yeah!), 3 kids, now in pre-menopause.

The question is “is there a recommendation by Docs or Rx manufacturers as to taking or not taking meds before lab tests?”

My wife takes her’s daily ~7:30a, and most times gets her labs done before 11am. My view is that she should not take meds until after draw as taking at her regular time will give higher readings. While I know there are long half-lives for Synthroid, it just seems ‘correct’ do give a baseline, not the temporary (albeit daily) increase that they would see from her taking it less than 8hrs ahead of draw.

Hello – The medical guidance recommends *not* taking meds before a blood draw, because of the transient change in levels that occurs in the hours immediately after dosing. However, I know of at least one doctor who believes that levels will fluctuate throughout the day anyway, so there is not likely to be a significant difference. Just one more thing the experts don’t completely agree on!
