“1. Do iron rich foods (i.e. spinach, seafood) have the same effect on the synthroid?”
They might, which is why it’s wise to take our thyroid replacement pill on an empty stomach, at least an hour before a meal. I would guess it would be safer to not eat your spinach and high iron foods for breakfast. (Gee, no liver for breakfast? Ah heck!)
“2. If I become anemic, what do I do? I do tend to run low in iron but am afraid to take supplements again.”
It’s fine to take the iron supplement, as long as you separate it as far as possible from the time you take the thyroid replacement pill. I have done this myself, with no problem. Generally, I think if you separate them by four hours or more, you will be fine.

NGDF Asst. Online FacilitatorJust need to clear something, Oatmeal will affect our medication? I always take mine with Oatmeal…and on a full stomach.. because it was too much for my stomach…
Taking the pill separate from food and nutritional supplements can reduce problems with variable absorption of the dose you take. If you always take your thyroid replacement pill with oatmeal, on a full stomach, then as long as you continue to take it that same way, you should do just fine, since the amount of your dose has been adapted to that. If you started taking it on an empty stomach at this point, your body might use it more efficiently, which could make you hyper.

Hi DonnaLynn,
To answer your questions: 1)I honestly cannot say yes or no if the foods themselves would affect the synthroid, but can tell you that Jake eats them in small, infrequent quantities and sees no ill effects from them. This is just our experience here. 2) The doctors tell you to NOT take iron or any other vitamin/mineral supplements with your synthroid, but to take them several hours later. Same goes for oatmeal and grapefruit juice.Hope this helps you clarify iron and its effects.
Best Wishes,
Jan
