Since having a hyper thyroid I was wondering if anyone else was told to avoid vitamins that have iodine in them. I have to take supplements due to
having had weight loss surgery 3+ years ago, and have found only a few brands that do not have iodine in them.I should be getting my blood work results today, and am very anxious to see what my thyroid readings are. I have been gaining so much weight back!
With the type of surgery I had, that’s not supposed to be such an issue to the great extent it has been for me..figures! Just wanted the people who posted they were gaining weight, to know they’re not alone!I am going to be 55yrs old next month and feel 155 yrs old some days. I have some displaced discs in my back, advanced arthritis in my hip and knee & home at this time on disability because I have such difficulty walking & I hurt all over. My body doesn’t realize my mind is still only 25! arrgghhh, it sucks getting old!
Just had to vent. I feel like I’ve lost control of my health lately & want to take the vitamins, do the exercise and anything else I can do to feel better.
Thanks for listening. ~EliseI’ve heard of patients being advised to avoid supplements with iodine, but it can be different from doctor to doctor. I can’t tell by your post exactly where you are in your thyroid treatment ~ did you have surgery to remove the thyroid, or is the reference to surgery just about your weight loss procedure?
If you no longer have a thyroid, ingesting iodine shouldn’t affect you like it would someone who still has a thyroid. The thyroid uses iodine to make thyroid hormone, so limiting the intake of iodine can limit the overproduction, but only if the thyroid is still working.
Thank you for your response..Sorry I was so unclear in my post. Besides everything else, I guess I have "brain fog" as well..lol
My surgery was for weight loss surgery. I still have my thyroid. I was on PTU for about 18 months before having RAI, which had no effect
on my thyroid. I went back on the PTU for another year, but stopped taking it when I had my weight loss surgery. At that time I was in "remission", as my doctor referred to it, so it was safe to have surgery, since no one would perform any surgery on me while my thyroid was so out of wack. Most doctors were afraid of my having a thyroid storm during surgery. Approximately 4 months ago, I went back on the PTU, and am presently taking 2 tablets per day. I am awaiting my blood test results and anxious to see what’s going on with my thyroid.
I have to take vitamins each day since having weight loss surgery, but wanted to know if anyone else was told not to take vitamins that have Iodine in them. It seems most vitamins have some Iodine. I’ve been taking Women’s One A Day vitamins, which do not have Iodine and will continue. I was just curious and thought perhaps I’d look into changing brands.
Hope that explains things a bit better. Thank you again:-)I order a no-iodine multivitamin from my doctor’s office called Thorne Research Advanced Nutrients V. What I don’t like about it, though, is that it contains 1,000+ percent of the RDA of some of the nutrients.
There is actually quite a bit of controversy over iodine and Graves. Some say to avoid it as much as possible if you have a hyperfuctioning thyroid. Others say that an iodine deficiency can exacerbate Graves.
It’s never easy, is it?
