I have no advice.
Just wanted to say ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((cat & mum))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Hi,
Poor Cat! This may not be of much help but my friend (who has no diagnosis of thyroidism) had problems with nodules. At first she didn’t know what the lumps on her neck were. She had them drained 3 times. On the 2nd occassion immediately after they drained them they filled up again. The ENT consultant then decided that she should have half her thyroid removed because of the continuous problems with them. As she had no thyroid issues she didn’t need thyroxine and has been fine.
I am sure that many people have the nodules drained and they are fine without requiring surgery.
I’m not sure about no anaesthetic though – don’t know if I would like that!

Hi,
Have just returned from taking my daughter to the endo for results of ultrasound. They have found several nodules, with one in particular causing concern as it is approx. 2cm in size. Also showed bleeding in or around this nodule. As she is only 17 the endo says this is atypical & concerning hence he is doing an ultrasound guided fine needle biopsy.
She developed a goitre rapidly about 6 weeks ago & I know that these can be nodular with GD (endo confirmed that she does definately have GD but is worried something else may be going on too). She’s on block & replace and that seems to be working as her levels are all ok now.
Does anyone have any info or experience of similar problems? Also, the endo says he wants to do the needle biopsy without anaesthetic, is this usual? What happens after the biopsy?
Grateful for any info.
Thanks,
W xCatsmum,
I have no info on nodules/biopsies but hopefully someone will reply that does.
Just wanted to say that I’m sorry to hear about Cat and will be thinking of her (and you). Keep us posted.
In my prayers,
EmilyNodules are pretty rare in Graves’ patients, so I’m not sure whether anyone here will have good info for you. I think that it might affect your treatment choice, ultimately, but the nodules might not be related to anything Graves’, it could just be her luck to have two things going on with her thyroid at once.
Not sure about doing the biopsy without anesthetic either though, eek! Do please let us know how this progresses for Cat, and each of you give the other BIG hugs from all of us!
I had a nodule and when they did the RAIU uptake and scan…they could tell from that, that is wasn’t cancerous. It was a hot nodule, not a cold one. They found it during an ultrasound, and I didn’t even know there was one there to begin with. I’ve heard and researched that the biopsy is done without numbing it up. I didn’t like that idea myself. My endo said that the GD and the nodule had nothing to do with each other. I just so happened to have two different things going on at once. And because of what they found on the scan, I didn’t have to have a biopsy. Hope that helps. You and dauther are in my prayers. Rhonda
Thanks, Rhonda
That’s reassuring. Cat’s endo has never mentioned a RAI uptake scan, although I know most GD patients on this form seem to have had them. I though that would be his next line of investigation, rather than a biopsy.
We though Cat must have a nodule before the ultrasound scan as one side of her thyroid was much more englarged that the other. Also, the swelling would subside a little after a few days then enlarge again, apparently this was because it was haemorhaging periodically. This alarmed the endo, as did the speed at which the swelling appeared, the sze of the largest nodule (approx 1" diameter) & the fact that Cat is ony 17. Apparantly all of these features are very unusual with nodules. Her latest levels were fine, suggesting the nodule wasn’t hot (not good news). The ultrsound showed several nodules but one was much bigger than the other.
Guess we’ll just have to wait for the biopsy & keep our fingers crossed that all is well.
Thanks again for your support, take care,
