I’m scheduled for RAI on Wednesday. I’ve been off my anti-thyroid meds for two weeks. I know you are not supposed to take anti-thyroid meds for five days before RAI but what about beta blockers? Does anyone know if you’re supposed to discontinue those too? Thanks appreicate quick replay as I am HYPER!!!! I am so agitated I can barely type! At least being in this condition makes me want to run to the nearest radiation plant and get nooked! I was begining to think I was O.K. until now. thanks again

    Hi, Lauren:

I know it’s the weekend, and therefore a problem getting through, but I really think the best person to ask this question of is your doctor, or perhaps someone in the nuclear medical lab you will be going to on Wednesday (they may keep weekend hours). I’m fairly sure that I stayed on the beta blockers throughout this time, but given that memory is an if-fy issue with out-of-whack hormones, I would not, if I were you, trust my memory. ; ) Anyway, I know how you are feeling right now, and you might be able to get a call-back from your endo even though it IS a weekend — or get through to the lab personell where there might be a doctor working. It is definitely worth the try if you find you can go back on them.

Wishing you luck, and wishing I could give you a more helpful answer.

    Lauren,
The radioligist told me to stay on the beta blockers for a few days which I did need because after the RAI for about a week my symptons of hyper escalated. You can ask the Radioligist when you are there to get the dose. Mine talked to me about 15 mininutes before giving the pill. Good Luck and Good Health.

Tomorrow I am having an I123 test done. Since I don’t want to appear stupid when I go the hospital and ask for the proper area–is that the same as an Iodine Uptake? When my Dr. told me what to get he just called it an iodine scan. Also, does anyone know about how long it would take for the Dr. to get the results of the scan? I’m on a time frame here and if they signify GD, he’s already suggested RAI. One last question (I promise) on the “prescription” for the test he wrote no subacute thyroid–hwat’s that? Thanks!

Why not give your doctor (or his/her nurse if he/she’s too busy) a phone call and ask those questions? You’d probably get an answer more suited to your specific condition. Otherwise, try one of the doctors specializing in Graves listed in the NGDF referal lists.
