Hi Sharie,
Welcome ~ and thanks for some new information! I had not heard of this before! We may hear from others who’ve experienced it, but I can say pretty reliably that I’ve never seen a similar post.
Pharmacists are extremely knowledgeable individuals as to medication reactions, so it seems you’ve already heard from an authority, and good news that it’s not affecting your healthy teeth and gums ~ I’ll leave it to others to let you know if they’ve had it happen to them.
Did she tell you whether it’s likely to continue?
Hey I have not had that exact problem but I did develop severe tooth decay and osteoperosis. I am only 48 and was diagnosed w/osteo-penia soon after being diagnosed w/graves 9 years ago. I think I read that it sucks the calcium out of your body. I’m a brand new member too and learned more yesterday in those conversations than I ever have from a dr. This is a blessing!
Hi everyone, I am very grateful for this site….found it by accident while I was searching for info. It has answered many questions for me already!
I am 45 years old and was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease by my endo less than 2 weeks ago, after my thyroid scan. I have been put on Methimazole 30 mg daily and have been on it for just 11 days ( FT4 was >100 and TSH 0) I am tolerating it well, but have developed very dark purplish gums in the past few days. I normally have very healthy teeth and gums, and was beside myself and worried about my teeth falling out or something! I convinced my dentist to squeeze me in and have a look at them. She said that Methimazole can cause hyperpigmentation of skin (my dentist was a pharmacist before). She doesn’t think it is anything to worry about because there is no bleeding or swelling of the gums and they don’t hurt. I didn’t see any posts related this problem…..just wondering if anyone else has had this on Methimazole? The only other med I take is Propanolol 10 mg three times/day. Thanks,
Sharie
No the Dr. did not know whether the purplish discoloration would go away or not. I’ve decided to not look at my gums, that way I won’t worry about them! ” title=”Smile” /> It seems this disease gives you more than enough other things to worry about!
I read when I researching to use Tapazole or PTU back in 2001 that;
Tapazole(methimazole) can cause bruising and bleeding in the literature that the drug companies provide. But my Pharmasist also said that not only can it cause that but it has been known in about less than 10% (could have been less than 5% though, forgive me I don’t remember) that it can cause discoloration of skin like on the gums.
I would call the the pharmaceutical company that makes that particular brand of Tapazole and ask them.
I hate to throw this out there without proof but I know I read it somewhere years ago and the pharmacist talked to me about it. It was when I was figuring out if tap was better than PTU. we went with PTU due to tryingn to get pregnant so I never did anything further with the Tapazole research.
