It took me a full four months to go hypo after my RAI. I had hyper symptoms and test results up until the sudden switch to hypo. My endo told me that it might be a sudden change. I wouldn’t give up hope yet that it hasn’t worked. Your four month mark is just today. I’ve heard it can take up to six. Hope you are feeling better this morning.

    mama,

I totally know where you are at. I know that the "hyper" stage is really rough. It is exactly like you said, good days and bad. Do you know what you T4 is? I have found through this entire graves disease process that I feel my best when my t4 is on the lower end of normal. Is your t4 still really high? Last month when I was still really hyper, my T4 was out of range. That’s when I get more of the symptoms of the hyper thryoid. Maybe keep track of your tsh AND t4 and see how it lines up with your sympoms.

    You will get through these:)

    Mama,

It took me about 2 1/2 months before i went hypo. During that time, i felt my best!!!!! I was sooooooo hoping it would always stay that way…low and behold…hypo kicked in within ONE WEEK! The beginning of the week i was cleaning the house at 1am wide awake and by the end of the week i was in bed by 8pm with fatigue, sleepiness, etc. When i went to get my blood work done I had gone from an 8.1 to an 84! I felt like i was gonna go into a coma! Thank God i got on the synthroid when i did. Also, when i got the Synthroid she said it takes 6 weeks to start working! Lets just say, most of October 09 was a blur to me!

It will definitely get better Mama. From what you posted about the good and bad feelings…it could be the trigger of your hypo! Hope you feel better soon!! Take care and keep us posted!

Just one quick comment about thyroid hormone replacement ~ it’s not that it takes six weeks to work, it takes six weeks to build up enough in your system so that labs read accurately how your body is reacting. The substance is available to your body right away, but there is a period at first of building up your "stores." We take the inactive form of thyroid hormone, which is typically in some form of constant supply, at the ready to be converted into the active form by our body when we need it. When we get such extremely low thyroid hormone levels overall from removal of the thyroid through either RAI or surgery, it can take a while for the stores to build back up so that we have a truly constant amount available for use.
