I had RAI in Feb. 2012. I went hypo pretty quick (end of April 2012). Started 150 mcg Synthroid then and have pretty much stuck with that dose. TSH has been a little up and down. This April (2013), TSH was down to .1 suddenly (not sure about the T3/T4), so endo cut my Synthroid down to only 6 days a week and nothing on the 7th day. (All seems odd and they keep telling me I am on a very low dose for my weight of 300 lbs, but they just shrug and say the numbers are ok.) Anyway, off and on female issues. Lots of hot flashes which I assumed was peri-menopause and then they seemed more severe when they changed my Synthroid, so I presumed that’s all the hot flashes were about. They have leveled out now. (Last TSH in August was 2.5 or something.) Doing some testing to find more kidney stones and discovered ovarian cysts (one complicated which they are concerned about) and uterine fibroids, so hysterectomy was scheduled.
So my questions are really just 1) should I have a thyroid panel done just in case (I have 3 weeks until the hysterectomy), so I can adjust meds if necessary. 2) They are going to start me on HRT beginning with a hormone shot in the hospital which is supposed to help the sudden hormone drop (though it can’t be much since I was confirmed peri-menopausal). Will the HRT affect my thyroid levels and will I need to have the levels tested a little more often to be sure it isn’t affecting it?
Any other thoughts / precautions? (Please don’t post bad stories/experiences trying to say I shouldn’t do this. I just need some advice if others have precautions that are different due to the Graves.)
Thank you!
Hello – Hopefully, you will get some other responses from others who have had this procedure done.
Personally, I would want to have T3/T4 levels checked prior to surgery, since your last TSH test was suppressed.
Also, yes, HRT can affect the dose of Synthroid, so definitely follow up with your doctor within the first few weeks to get levels checked again.
Hope all goes well!
