Sorry to hear you went hypo. This is a really bad season for that. I was borderline hypo and all I wanted to do is sleep. After adjusting my medicine down, I was still on methimazole, and then stopping it 10 days ago, I feel like a new person. I have so much energy. I have been shopping and doing errands for 2 days. I don’t know if I am actually “normal” for now or if this is hyper again. I know it can’t last as I still have to do RAI.
As far as the weight gain, think “spandex”! A couple pair of pants with “spandex” can get you through the ups and downs of weight gain. I have actually went up 2 sizes since all this began. There are some nice dress pants out there with spandex in them. I also like jumpers and boots during the winter. I am one of those that had lost weight in the beginning. But, I was too thin to begin with so I like the weight gain.
I have had to adjust my diet some, not as many sweets, which is a killer for me. I have always lived off sweets. I eat more fruit now. I’ll keep you in my prayers.
I just got my lab results back and now I have gone way the other way! Does anyone know how long this takes to get to a normal level? I feel like I have been messing around with this for forever! Not to mention I was one of the “lucky” ones that gained wieght from the start and now it is even worse gaining 2lbs a week on average, I just want to be “normal” before i blow up like a balloon! On a good note I just wanted to say that I’m happy for you Mammaw that it is not TED and I hope those drops work for you! Thanx all for listening
Weight loss, while we are hyperthyroid, includes loss of muscle mass. Muscle weighs more than other tissues, but it burns more calories — even at rest — than other tissues. So losing muscle is bad weight loss because it lowers your metabolism and weakens you. That eventually catches up with us when we go back to normal levels of hormone, or subnormal levels of hormone after treatment. (It can even catch up with some of us while we are still hyperthyroid. Yes, some folks do gain weight while hyperthyroid!)
When we regain normal, controlled levels of thyroid hormone muscle begins to return slowly. This appears as weight gain. But this part of any weight gain is GOOD weight to gain, because it raises your metabolism.
During the periods of fluctuation, however, it can be devilishly hard to keep weight issues under control. The best thing to do, if you are concerned about it, is to make sure that all your food is nutritious (your poor body needs good nutrients coming in right now), and to severely limit “empty” calories. This will help. A lot.
