After TED has reached its ‘cold phase’ and healing is in progress, how much improvement is there in eye dryness, irritation and redness e.g. veins etc..? Do people still find their eyes are the same or improving/improved etc..? Also what are the eyes like after decompression surgery and how do they feel? Oh and is pain/soreness in the throat area a sign of trouble with the thyroid gland?

Hello – you might use the “search posts” feature in the top right-hand corner of the screen and check Shirley’s posts (snelsen), as she has been great about documenting her experience with her TED surgeries.

For anyone with a history of Graves’, I would say that pain/soreness in the throat area is worth getting checked out. For those on Anti-Thyroid Drugs, a severe sore throat (especially with fever) warrants a call to your doctor’s office ASAP, as this can potentially be a sign of side effects with the meds.

I havent had my first endo appointment yet so will mention my throat. Also I dont have much eye tearing, mainly dryness, stinging, itchiness and redness and blurry vision with slight eye protrusion and pain and headaches. Will be seeing the eye specialist in a month or so for the first time also as my optician referred me. I do seem to get exhausted easily and sleep for hours but not taking any meds as yet.

Kells1, while you are waiting for the eye specialist, start using artificial tears types of eye drops as often as you feel the need. It will protect the corneas from drying out, and possibly getting scratches. Some of us need to put them in every 15 minutes or so — it depends upon the individual. But if your eyes are feeling dry, use the drops. BTW, our doctors recommend that we use the artificial tears without preservatives, that come in single dose packets.

Hi Kells, gosh, sometimes I forget the obvious! Guess I figured you were using non-preservative eye drops already! My favorite is Bausch and Lombes, Smooth. My eyes are dry, and since I am in the (at least) third year of Graves’ I don’t expect that to improve very much. I always carry them with me. And always looking for them on sale, which is rare. I think I have also gotten Genteel in the past. I also use lubricant at night.
