hi everyone. I’ve had Graves for about 3 years (that I’ve known about). Weaning off the methimazole didn’t help so I finally gave in to my doctor and did the RAI pill after much debating and soul searching. That was over 3 months ago. I kept waiting for something to happen but I felt great afterwards and still feel okay. I thought i was supposed to go high, then low. I’ve been getting blood tests every month and I’m just creeping back up. I’ve been high for over two months but the doctor just keeps saying – wait until next month as long as you feel fine. So i’ve been off any meds and I’m high. Starting to feel it a little but not sure if that is just me being nervous. What happens now?? Will I ever go low? Do I have to go back on methimazole? I don’t think the doctor will let me do that. Do I have to take that expensive pill again? Have you ever heard about this happening before? Any feedback would help. Thanks
Hi!!
I think I went hypo within about 2 months or so after having the RAI.
I think everyone’s body is different and will react differently to the meds. I know someone here had it done and had a similar experience to you.
Hopefully they will chime in and give you some advice…

Hello – RAI can take anywhere from 6-18 weeks to do its work. If you do creep hyper again, anti-thyroid drugs are an option to bring levels back down while you wait for the RAI to take effect. Definitely discuss this with your doc if you become symptomatic.
Take care!
Hello
In arriving at the best treatment for you your doctor will have to look at your particular case. His telling you what he thinks is best for you is important but also equally import is his making clear to you the reason for his choice of treatment. He should tell you why the other choices are not as good. If you do not understand be sure to let him know.Don’t hesitate to let you doctor how you feel now.
Let us know how your next visit with your doctor goes.
EllenIt sounds like everyone reacts differently.
I’m 3 weeks out. When I did my blood test last week, I found out that I’m already out of the hyper zone and am at the high range of normal. In every thing but the TSH which has remained the same as hyper.
I’m going for another lab test tomorrow, and then hopefully if I’m dropping some more I can start some synthroid.I haven’t felt any hyper feelings, my hands even stopped shaking. I think during my RAI 3 days I had 30 seconds of heart pounding and that was it.
But my body is strange, and I know when I took the methimazole I think it majorly sank my levels, I felt terrible.
I’m sorry you’ve had such a rough go after the RAI, I hope it kicks in soon and gives you a break, hang in there!
Well, 16 weeks out and still high, i think. I will take another blood test next week. Hard to tell if i am having symptoms but definitely feeling mood swings, anxiety and a little shakiness. But that could also be menopause, who knows? Still have tons of energy, working out a lot, losing weight on the South Beach diet. I know, i shouldn’t complain after reading so many horrible stories on this forum. It will be interesting to see what the doctor says after the next blood test. Funny, i was so worried about becoming a different person after the pill but that didn’t happen. Maybe we are the way we are and nothing can change that. I don’t mean that we are supposed to be really ill but maybe some people are just more revved up than others and a pill can’t change that. Sorry, just getting philosophical on a Monday afternoon.
Hi, had my RAI on 12/12/12 and did not go hypo until mid-April 2013. Still had the ups and downs early on, my endo wanted me to take Tapozole beginning in March, 5 mg. to speed things along, but we decided to give it one more month and sure enough I went hypo in that month without the meds. It will happen soon, I know being patient is difficult after all we had been through.
