I was diagnosed with GD three years ago, had RAI and have experienced ups and downs with my levels since then. Currently taking 25mcg of Synthroid. I have changed jobs to reduce stress, I work out at the gym 5 days a week, eat more organic foods (but yeah, an occasional burger passes my lips!). I had been maintaining a weight for a while and am now seeing it creep back up. The number is alarming to me, but I expressed to my Endo. at my last appointment that the pants I was wearing that day fit two weeks ago and now, snug. She suggested I add another hour workout each day (2 hours total then). Wow, is that what it really takes to keep the gain under control? ” title=”Confused” /> I am trying SO hard not be discouraged by a number on the scale but some days it just seems no matter what I try, it’s not working. I’m not a dieter, no fads, pills, etc. Have tracked my calorie intake for months and get right around 1400-1600 most days. Any tips from those of you who have been successful in losing and keeping off the weight? Unfortunately, my Endo said she can’t ‘give’ me the weight loss symptom some folks get!! (kidding).
Hello – If you do a search for “weight” on this board, you can see that many patients struggle with weight gain after treatment. During a panel discussion at our 2009 conference in Charlotte, I asked a question about weight gain and treatment for hyperthyroidism. One of the doctors on the panel indicated that it’s possible there might be a “resetting” of one’s metabolism following thyroid issues. So that’s potentially one *more* challenge that we have to deal with.
Here are a few suggestions from a nutritionist who also presented at the 2009 conference:
1. Include breakfast daily within 2 hours of waking up.
2. Don’t go longer than 5 hours in between meals
3. Select “high volume” and “high fiber” foods such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains
4. Limit servings of healthy fats to 1 per day
5. Prioritize at LEAST 7 hours of sleep a nightOnce a doctor’s clearance is obtained to engage in activity, she also recommended 150 minutes per week of physical activity, plus strength training 2 times per week.
