I know there have been a lot of posts and threads about puffy eyelids, but has anyone had their upper eyelids itch before they puffed up? (Not the eyeball itself, but the skin on the upper lid).

During the past 5 weeks I’ve had two instances of my eyelids getting very itchy to thee point that I had to use lots of discipline to stop scratching them (just the upper lids) and then the next morning they would be swollen, similar to what happens when you have a good cry.

I tried to think of what I may have eaten differently and came up with something so assumed, “OK, I had an allergic reaction to a new food and since it wasn’t great anyway, I’ll not eat it again.”

Sunday (4 weeks later) I ate something that I HAVE eaten before, and shortly after my eyelids started to itch and the next morning, puffy eyelids. So I have been researching and investigating what ingredient the two different foods have in common, and may or may not have narrowed it down. But then it occurred to me….. I’ve also changed Levothyroxine doses twice in the past 8 weeks or so…. so is it the famous “puffy eyelids when levels fluctuate” that I’m experiencing?

I’ve gone back and read a lot of the old threads and didn’t notice anyone mentioning the itch so now I don’t know if I’m leaning towards food allergy or thyroid.

    Thanks in advance.

Nope. I have had LOTS of eye issues, but not this one!
Itching is as bad as pain. Darn, sorry this is happening.
I’m guessing it is not thyroid.
But you also have probably eaten the same for years……..

Yes, I pretty much have eaten the same for decades, that’s why when I DID try something brand new to me and then had itchy and puffy eyes a few hours later I thought it must be a food allergy thing (even though I’ve never been allergic to anything in my life).

When it happened again Sunday with a food I have eaten many times, and when the nutritionists from each place gave me the full list of ingredients, I’m not so sure it’s a food allergy anymore.

Googling puffy eyelids and itchy eyelids and thyroid, I find a lot of posts that say thyroid level fluctuations can and do cause this, so who knows? I guess I’ll wait a few weeks and try one of these foods again to see what happens.

Hello – I haven’t heard of this, but one thing you might consider is using some cleansing wipes specifically for the eyes. Not sure if you can buy them in any drug store, but my optometrist’s office sells them. Maybe worth a try!

Sue, I am one who has experienced this as part of my puffy eye problem. The itching (and dryness) usually precedes the puffing in my case. I’m not exactly sure what causes it either, only that it came along with my other thyroid related issues & my eye specialist said that it was due to abnormal and/or moving levels. Since my levels have stabilized it happens much less frequently – but I still experience it from time to time. :(

Thank you, Christina! Your post is the final piece to this puzzle I needed! I have been working with both companies of the foods that allegedly caused my eye issue and we can’t seem to find a common ingredient in both foods that would cause this.

We had a Health Fair at work the other day and I had a long talk with the nutritionist there. I explained what happened and my health history and she highly doubts it was a food allergy. She’s betting it was the change in thyroid meds, too.

Yes, my eye LIDS get very itchy, and then probably irritated from me scratching them, and the next morning they are swollen. And yes, I am I the midst of yet another dose change.

I am going to venture out and try those foods that I thought caused me problems in the next week or two and see if it happens again. if it doesn’t, then it’s not a food allergy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. . . it helped so much in trying to figure this out.
