I am not sure I understand your question.

Our thyroid when it was healty produced T4 which is converted to T3. The thyroid also produced a small amount of T3 as well. When we have RAI or thyroidectomy we lose the T3 the thyroid produced.

The synthetic thyroid hormone is T4 alone. The body converts that to T3.

So yes our bodies will not produce T3 by themselves any longer. If we do not convert T4 to T3 well we can take a different drug called Armour which is made from ground up animal thyroids. It has both T3 and T4 in it.

Is the other hormone you are talking about TSH perhaps?

my husband had radioactive iodine treatment 11 months ago. His levels are still not right… the synthroid makes him on the high side of the hormone that it controls but the other 2 factors are very low… .01 and non existant. the doctor thinks his synthroid is artificially high and is fooling his body into not producing the other 2 hormones. will his body ever produce the other 2 hormones? his thyroid is completely gone. he was on 250mg, then down to 225 now at 200. he says he feels tired and is gaining weight (his biggest fear) he is very young… he thinks he is “broke” and will never produce the hormones he needs… is he right?

I found the comment about the changes in hormone levels as a possibily being a cause of Graves. I was given PremPro as a “cure “for menopause symptoms and went through a scary time that they needed to biopsy to rule out Breast Cancer”neg thank God. but they took me off of it abruptly and then had severe bleeding problems that I had to have uterine ablation.

Then 9mo later I developed Graves.

There is no way to predict how quickly your sister-in-law will respond to the RAI treatment. I was on replacement hormone within about five weeks. Other people go months before they see a positive response. About 10% have to repeat the treatment.

I had rai on 11/11/03. my numbers have come down and expect to be on synthroid by the end of the month…but you just never know. She has to keep in close contact with her endo and have her levels tested…probably every 4-5 weeks. The anticipation of it getting better is hard, but it does slowly get better.

    Wish her luck from me!

I just want to say thanks to you…this web site has really helped me to understand what my sister in law is going through (she had RAI on 1/2/04.) I am going to tell her about this site and encourage her to check it out…she needs all the support she can get. Thanks again, and God Bless!
