Dear Catlin..looking back I have had that itchy skin thing going on…first time I knew something was up with my body and all my test were fine but i rember getting this awful rash on my thighs..just thought it was a new soap or something. Then a few months ago I got a rash again and I was clawing at myself..never put the two together but but now that you mention it…..
Yes – I had that too – and I was told that it was due to the Hyperthyroid. I thought I would scratch my skin off, especially on my back and legs – I even had really itchy scalp and I wanted to shave my head bald! Once I had been on meds for awhile it went away! Even more so after I had RAI.
Best Wishes!I was just wondering if anyone else suffers with hives and itching skin. I never had this problem before I began to have thyroid problems. I’m sure it must be related but the doctors seem dismissive. My thyroid medication has eased the problem considerably but I do get occasional allergy type hive attacks. When this happens I could rip the skin of my back it is that bad. Only lasts a few hours and leaves no marks. It usually happens at night when the pressure of lying in bed irritates my skin. I know it isn’t connected to a food allergy. Any clues?
As I sit here reading today’s posts, I am itching–I know I shouldn’t scratch, but….I even wake up with scratch marks. I had RAI only 6 days ago and while I was off my Tapazole, prior to and after the RAI, I had very little problems with hives or itching. I started back on Tapazole yesterday and am going nuts tonight with “the itchies”. My Endo told me earlier that it was probably from the Tapazole (Methimazole). It seems to be worse at night. Good to know others are experiencing the same problem.
Oh my Gosh! Yes…itching. It was due to my Graves, it was one of the first symptoms. I thought i had some kind of skin problem. Once I got on beta blockers it stopped completely, also after the rai treatment. I remember waking myself up scratching in the middle of the night! Yikes! Tell your doc and see if he can give you something. I remember…its crazy itching!
Wow,
I’m suprised at how many people also had this problem. I had bouts of terrible itching (mostly on my back as someone else mentioned) for a long time before I was diagnosed (I’m talking years). After I had RAI and my meds were straightened out, I no longer have the itching. My endo said he had heard of the itching problem, but supposely they don’t really understand the connection with the thyroid.
Hope everyone is doing ok.Kimmie
Boy, does sharing info help. I had terrible itching on my back and inside my ears. Dr. said it was Exzema from the dry winter heating season. Gave me some cream to put on my skin an lotion for ears but it subsided and now I realize my thyroid levels were off a bit on the high side and now they are down a bit the itichies have subsided.
Thanks so much everyone for responding and sharing your itchiness.I feel like some sort of crazed monkey when it gets really bad. One
One other thing I have noticed is that before the hives/itching starts my skins gets really warm and sometimes burns or tingles. Some of you seem to get itching with medication and others seem to improve with medication. I take Carbimazole (neomercazole) and Propanolol ( Deralin/Inderal) for Graves and Blood Pressure but also Aurorix (Moclobemide/Arima) for depression. Some one told me that because Arima is an MOA inhibitor I shouldn’t take it with Propanolol and also because I was diagnosed with Raynaud’s many years ago I shoudn’t take Propanolol because of Graves….a mine field of confusion!!! Hard to know what these drugs are doing to us. Anyway, I have found that no matter what anti-itch creams I use it doesn’t help. Anti-histamines do help but they make me too druggy and tired on top of all the other meds.
Thanks also for the suggestioin re allergic reaction to the meds. and bone marrow problems. I have had my white blood cells checked very recently and all is ok.
Best Wishes from Australia Caitlin MCaitlin M…Is Carbimazole the Australian equivalent to PTU and Tapazole???…if I read your post correctly you are taking this for Graves???
I suffered from hives long before being diagnosed with Graves’. When an episode of the hives would occur, I also swelled so that my lips turned inside out and my ears stuck straight out from my head. The itching is so maddening. I can truly understand your problem.
Aside from going to the emergency room these are some things that helped me.
Run a bath of tepid water. Dump a small box of baking soda in and stir it around. Stay in the water as long as possible (until you’re freezing) You can also make a past of baking soda and water and apply to the affected area. I have also been known to jump into a swimming pool and swim, swim, swim.
Heat tends to bring out hives. Don’t sleep with anything but a sheet and use a fan. Don’t wear clothing that constricts. Pressure points also have a tendancy to bring them out. Sometimes taking an antihistimine(not sure if I can say the common one I took)at the onset and sleeping as described above would deter them completely.
Good Luck! Angelia
Yes, I am taking Carbimazole ( also called neomercazole) for Graves. Not sure what name it may go under in the US – sorry. Caitlin
I had horrible hives for quite sometime before any one diagnosed me. The only thing that ever helped was Benadryl, anti itch creams don’t work. Allegra did not work and taking steroids only worked for the short time I took them. I know it is rough with the tiredness I was going to college and working but Benadryl is the only that works. It also helps to take the Benadryl right when you feel the hives comming on.
Beleive me I know what you are going through. It took two years to get of my hives, and only after taking radioactive iodine.
